Brandy Melville
Brandy Melville
I don't know why I haven't made an entry on them yet. Brandy Melville is a clothing brand originally made in Italy, but gained true popularity from their stores in California, which makes sense if you look at their clothes. Their clothes may also give like a New York City Girl depending on how you style them. But, I love the way the clothes look. They're cute, they look comfortable, and they fit relatively well ON THEIR AUDIENCE. I emphasized that last part because I genuinely mean that. They've been under fire for YEARS about the way they size things. They're notoriously known for their one-size-fits-all sizing, and that upsets people because there are many people who are bigger than a size 6 who'd love to wear Brandy. As cool as that seems, they're not the brand to do that.
Many people also don't like the employees who work there, as they are just as notoriously known to be racist. Which sucks because I really want to go to one of their stores, but the way I'd basically be run out of the store is insane. Unfortunately, that's not the main issue with people. Again, it's the sizing. I see the problem because now more than ever inclusivity with clothes is important. But they also don't have to cater to anyone but tall skinny white girls. I view them in the same category as Victoria's Secret or Abercrombie and Fitch. They cater to that tall, skinny white girl, and it's ok to do so. Well, they don't have to be tall, but you get the idea. Think of it this way, everyone knows what the Victoria's Secret Angels look like, right? Imagine them but off duty. They'd wear things that ONLY look like Brandy Melville's sizing. But I feel like that's the whole point. Like how the VS Angels were literally supposed to represent the most unattainable beauty standard, Brandy Melville does the same in their own way.
Now for some appreciation. I really do think their clothes are cute, regardless of who they fit or not. I genuinely want stuff from them, especially jewelry. I feel like some would be better quality than at stores like H&M or Forever21. I do want their clothes, but a lot of them I'd have to see in person because I'm worried they'd be see-through or just thin. Many of the girls in the product pictures don't seem to be wearing bras either, which is something important to note about how the clothes are cut or how they fit. I think the light-colored tops would be too light to have a proper bra underneath. The models probably just wear pasties, which is another good option for those who just don't wear bras anyway. But the pictures below are, in my opinion, some of the most notable types of things on their website. I think the tank top is certainly number 1 due to the pattern of the fabric. I really do like their clothes, they're just slightly out of my budget. Whenever I have a higher budget I'll definitely try to at least get a sweatshirt or some jewelry.
Brandy Melville is a brand that will always receive some type of backlash for one thing or another. Let's be honest, no big business has a clean image, no matter how much defending one can do. But with businesses these days, we all have to pick and choose which values are more important and hope for the best.
