Plaid: An Appreciation
Plaid: An Appreciation
Plaid...it's one of my favorite patterns for clothing. I think Houndstooth is my favorite, but it's a tight race. But I'll do a houndstooth appreciation in a later entry, probably during November. It's a very "winter" kind of pattern to me.
There was a time when I didn't like it because I usually saw it on older people, or it would be kilts. I never thought it could be for young people. But I think I just needed to see it styled right.
The first time I saw plaid being styled nicely was when I saw Rachel from Friends. I thought the show itself was okay, but I watched it because of her outfits. The outfit on the left is probably one of my favorite outfits. I liked it because it looked so adult compared to what I was wearing (I was like 10). I think my anxiety got to me a few years later because I was scared of being judged by other people. Not being basic in a world of Nike Tech and white Air Force 1s can be stressful, especially when people think you're dressing up when to me, it's just growing up. Like you transition from those clothes to more "adult-ish" clothes. But when I reached high school I realized no one cares that much. And if they are they really have nothing better to do.
Over the past few years, I've been SLOWLY building up this wardrobe because unfortunately, I still need sneakers to match with stuff. When it comes to shoes I like, sneakers aren't usually the first shoe I think of. I think of platform boots or heels. Maybe even mary janes or oxfords. But they're shoes to match this style of dressing. I think that'll be one of my goals in life, to have a type of job to wear I can dress like this all the time.
I like certain colors of plaid though. I love a pink plaid, but it has to be the right shade of pink. And then the secondary colors have to be right for me to consider getting it. A lot of the time I see a pink plaid skirt, it's with orange secondary lines and I hate it. Then again, I just hate orange. But I enjoy pink plaid with black or white, like the pattern image below. It's just hard to find the right shade of pink in person or online. The measurements of the pleated ones are also super hard to get around. That's why I tend to look for the tighter-fitting ones when it comes to plaid skirts. They're the ones that can actually fit me correctly. They're long enough. The two you see below wouldn't fit me right because of how short they are. However, I may work up the confidence to wear the shorter ones you see in the 90s and 2000s.
There's also this longer plaid skirt I'm so excited about. It's a black and pink midi plaid/tartan skirt coming from SHEIN. I know how people feel about SHEIN, but I'm still a broke college student until I have a job. So I'm definitely going to wash and wear it in the upcoming weeks. My mom even said she had a couple of skirts like it back in the day, though I'll do a separate entry on her and my dad.
Now, regarding trends, I don't see plaid going completely out of style. They're obviously going to decline in popularity, as all trends do, but I see future generations going back to this. Just like we did.
