Sprite Can (50 years of Hip-Hop)
Recently, Sprite is celebrating 50 years of Hip-Hop. Why Sprite specifically is celebrating the creation of Hip-Hop is because they were the first major company to launch a tv ad with a Hip-Hop artist in 1986. That artist was named Kurtis Blow.
Kurtis Blow, born August 9, 1959 (my birthday!), was raised in Harlem, New York. In 1979, he was the first commercially famous rapper and the first signed to a major label called Mercury.
Another extremely influential figure in the Hip-Hop community is a group called Run DMC. They originated in Queens, New York City. They're also credited to be some of the creators of the Hip-Hop sound, along with Kurtis Blow. They went on to be the first Hip-Hop acts to achieve a gold record and go platinum.
These are extremely honored people in the Hip-Hop community and helped inspire the fashion people usually think of when they hear the words "hip-hop." The chains, bucket hats, tracksuits, big jewelry, etc. Many of these things are still prevalent in today's black culture, as much of it never went out of style for us. Sprite is helping us celebrate a style of music that's important to my culture. It expresses so many things. It could be about the hardships of life, someone you love, or it can be something silly. Either way, Hip-Hop is a form of expression for us, whether it be in the music, or the fashion.
