Breakdown:
MasterFormatDivision Sub-Category.SequenceNumber
Examples:
2651.01 Forum Keynote Template endorsed keynote
2651.90 Project-specific Keynote Section Header
2651.91 Project-specific Keynote
Commentary:
The first 4 digits are MasterFormat 2010. Forum is only using Master Format Level 1 (2) digit division and Level 2 (2) digit sub-category.
The Dot "." separates the use of Master Format and the Forum sequence number
Digits 5 and 6 are the two-digit Forum sequence number dictated by the Forum Production Leaders committee.
Production Leaders committee default is to add new additions as the next number in the sections' existing sequence.
Production Leaders committee may yearly revise the numbering of each section.
Project-specific Keynotes may be added to any section but must begin the numbering at 90.
Copy 0000-Keynotes-FAID to the ACC Design Team folder via drag and drop.
Rename the prefix of zeros to the project number.
In Revit use the Keynoting Settings dialog to specify the keynote file to use.
Annotate tab > Tag panel > Keynote drop-down > (Keynoting Settings)
With the Browse for Keynote File dialog open. Navigate to the keynote file to use, and click Open to load the keynote file. T:\Templates\0000-Keynotes-FAID.txt
Keynote files are text files that define the categories and keynote values that you assign to element types, materials, and individual elements.
Forum's Keynote file is located here
:\Templates\0000-Keynotes-FAID.txt
Autodesk default Keynote files that come with a standard installation reside in the Revit library, which is located by default in
C:\ProgramData\Autodesk\RVT 2023\Libraries\English-Imperial\
The following files are provided and installed during deployment:
RevitKeynotes_Imperial.txt
RevitKeynotes_Imperial_2004.txt
RevitKeynotes_Imperial_2010.txt
RevitKeynotes_Metric.txt
UniformatClassifications.txt
UniformatClassifications_2010.txt
Keynotes are defined in a tab-delimited text file. You can use Microsoft® Excel or a similar spreadsheet application to manage the data, then export it to a tab-delimited file format.
The first portion of the text file is reserved for major headings/categories (the parent values). The remainder of the file is for sub-headings/categories (the child values). A tab-delimited file requires the use of the Tab key to create spaces between data entries.
Changes made to the keynote table are not available in the current project session of Revit. Changes are available when the project is closed and reopened, or the file is reloaded from the keynote settings dialog.

Identify first keynote modified
Was it renumbered?
If yes, update associated Revit families and website documentation
Look for signs of deletion (misnumbering)
If suspected deletion, ask editor if anything was deleted
If keynote is new, associate with Revit family and website documentation
If sheet note changes, make sure to update the specific note in the sheet (renumbering may be a factor with deletion)
If editing keynote file in Excel, test in a clean Revit environment (Project, New, Template of None) before implementing
Strengths:
Consistency of endorsed verbiage
Provides connection of the tagged items and the project specifications.
Automated tagging and legend creation
Weaknesses:
6 digits in lieu of the previous 2 digits
Opportunities:
Speed up production
Improved consistency in the project and across the office
Spend more time on more important tasks
Threats:
Our competition is already benefitting from the automation
History:
6.2.22 One of the challenges with the move to Revit has been the shift in how key notes have been handled. There are some real benefits to utilizing the power of Revit to automate and simplify keynoting, but we also need a system that is compatible with the way we have traditionally worked as well as flexible for future changes. Several different options for a system that would be universal throughout a project (and throughout the office) were evaluated and it was agreed that a modified Master Format system would be the best solution. Versions of this are used by many other companies and should be familiar to many of our clients and contractors. Our system uses the first 4 digits of the specification section related to the item being tagged and then has a 2 digit variable that allows for future expansion. Once the keynotes are fully integrated, it will automate the tagging process and the legend will be generated with only the applicable notes.
Reference, Sheet Notes
WHEN THE KEYNOTE FILE RECEIVES UPDATES, THE A5.91 SHEET LOCATED IN THE DETAIL LIBRARY WILL BE UPDATED MANUALLY, NOT BY USING THE SHEETNOTE/KEYNOTE SCRIPT.
