Dimension tolerance is to always be 1/256"
A 1/256" tolerance ensures model accuracy, and exposes
incorrectly located elements
incorrectly sized elements
When all elements are correctly located & sized, there will be no 1/256" dimensions.
Dimensions with 1/256" must be corrected immediately as well as alert the entire team to the error. (This is a big deal!)
Please dimension early and always switch the Project units to Decimal inches rounding set to Custom 0.00000000001 for checking accuracy. This will allow you to ensure maximum accuracy. After any adjustments have been made, switch project units back to the standard.
Note: when fixing dimension strings, start on the origin side of the string and always work in one direction allowing the tolerance to accumulate opposite of the origin. See section Origin for additional information.
All dimensions of Walls are as follows:
Never edit Dimensions with Overridden measurement values.
Dimension values are to be set to "Use Actual Value."
Dimension Text Fields - Above, Prefix, Suffix, and Below are acceptable, as well as Replace With Text where no measurement value is in the text. Reference list below of available Prefixes and Suffixes.

Dimension lines should not intersect symbols, lines, leaders, room names, numbers, door numbers, or notes.
All Datums are to be designated using a Column/Grid Line representing a structural feature of the building. Datums are fixed points from which other measurements are based.
The distance between any two Datums is not to exceed 300' – 0" or a Structural diaphragm (Floor/Roof) expansion joint.
CurtainWall, Window Wall, and StoreFront Exterior mullions are Dimensioned to the Outside edge and the interior mullions to the center of the mullion.
All dimensions are to have the same rhythm, always using the Origin side of the Walls.
Exterior Walls & interior structural Walls are dimensioned to the Structural Exterior Face. CMU, Concrete, Stud
Dimension masonry so it will course out wherever possible, horizontally and vertically.
Interior Walls are to be dimensioned to Stud. This standard is consistent with the wall location line standard. Always dimensioning to the wall location line will avoid discrepancies in dimensions when wall types change. Wall location lines are to be set to the Origin. See section Origin for additional information.
Dimensions from finish to fixtures
Never dimension both sides of a wall
Never dimension the tub wall length nor the build-out depth. Instead, dimension the bathroom's overall depth only. If the bathroom matches tub length, locate only the most crucial bounding wall.
Dimension exterior walls outside of plan first:
String 1 - Centers of all Doors, Windows and Cased openings - use CL notation at all centerlines
Caution that Revit door/window families often do not have proper rough opening size. Reference project LOD requirements.
String 2 - Perimeter breaks
String 3* - Overall structural dimension and distance to tenant centerline - note O.S. to O.S.
String 4* - Overall dimension to centerline to tenant walls - note CL to CL or to stud at end units
*Overall dimensions should be shown only once per drawing, consistently throughout the set.
Dimension interior walls with closed strings across the plan as follows:
Vertical Strings - top to bottom, from O.S. to same side (top) and close at O.S. (bottom)
Horizontal Strings - left to right, from O.S. opposite side (right) and close to O.S. (right)
Room Size Strings - each Bedroom and Living Room shall have an overall single vertical and horizontal dimension to indicate its size. If the closed continuous strings did not cover each room with a single dimension, add a single string for the room size using the same sides of walls as shown in the Vertical and Horizontal Strings. These strings can be open if needed.
Include build-outs as needed
Locate doors only if they occur away from a wall and return. (Does a detail cover this?)
Don’t forget to locate low walls
Try to use as few closed strings as possible without creating legibility issues.
Do NOT dimension the same wall twice (except for Room Size Strings)
Strings may reference the same wall multiple times in order to catch other elements/ critical items. The measurement should not repeat if possible.
Do NOT include the tenant CL in any of the interior dimension strings.
Every wall should have an X and a Y dimension
Pay attention to reentrant exterior portions of buildings. Building breaks are typically dimensioned on outside strings whenever possible. However, notches may occur away from the side strings, and their depths should be dimensioned individually.
Angled Walls - whether interior or exterior, angled walls should always be dimensioned on the X, Y coordinates, using the same corners in both the vertical and horizontal strings (typically the near side of the string, as possible). Elements along the angled wall may be dimensioned at the angle as needed.
Columns & posts - must be located with centerline dimensions.
Curves & Arches - center points and spring points must be located in addition to radii dimensions.
Default is the lower left-most extent of the overall Building.
Avoid negative Coordinates when possible. Negative coordinates can affect engineering analysis and import and export results.
Vertically what is the Origin, so there are no negative numbers?
The Origin may be placed in other most extents of the building when the building is close to a boundary, and tolerance must be forced away from the boundary, ensuring the building does not cross the boundary.
When the Origin is not the default, the wall location lines and dimensions are to adjust to the Origin. Wall location lines will be closest to the Origin. Dimension side of objects will be Origin the side.
Forum has two Dimension Style “FAID” & FAID - Inches.
Do Not create new Dimension Styles or adjust.
