Brizomancy

Brizomancy definition

Brizomancy is the art of predicting future events through dreams. Macrobius (Roman writer, born in Africa, Neoplatonic philosopher) lists five types of dreams:

  • Visions

  • Discovering something between sleep and awakening

  • Suggestion given by our fantasy called by Cicero as Wesuma

  • Normal dream

  • Divine revelation, or prophetic dream

Brizomancy was practiced inter alia by the Egyptians who passed this custom on to the Romans. Apparently, the wife of Julius Caesar, was to see in a dream how he dies from the stabs inflicted by a knife.

Etymology:

From Ancient Greek Βριζώ (Brizṓ, “the goddess of dreams worshipped at Delos”), from βρίζω (brízō, “sleep”) +‎ -mancy. Compare Ancient Greek Βριζόμαντις (Brizómantis, “diviner of dreams, an apellation the goddess Brizo of Delos”).
