This week's readings from 2 Chronicles and Ezra recount Judah’s final years, the destruction of Jerusalem, and the beginning of Israel’s restoration from exile. Hezekiah invites the people to celebrate the Passover, calling them to return to the Lord, who is gracious and compassionate. Despite subsequent reforms under Josiah, Judah’s continued unfaithfulness leads to Jerusalem’s destruction and the exile of its people. Yet God’s judgment is not his final word. In fulfillment of his promise, the Lord stirs the heart of Cyrus, king of Persia, to permit the exiles to return and rebuild the temple. Under leaders such as Zerubbabel and Ezra, the people begin restoring worship and renewing their commitment to God’s Law.
These chapters emphasize God’s sovereignty, covenant faithfulness, human sinfulness, judgment, grace, and restoration. God’s people experience the consequences of persistent rebellion, yet God remains faithful to his promises and works through even pagan rulers to accomplish his purposes. The return from exile demonstrates that restoration depends on God’s initiative and mercy. The rebuilding of the temple and renewal of worship point forward to God’s greater work of redemption through Jesus Christ, who brings his people into lasting fellowship with God.

From How to Read the Bible through the Jesus Lens, Michael Williams makes these points about Ezra:
Phrase: Temple Restoration
Theme: God brings the exiles back to Jerusalem and directs that his temple be rebuilt.
Christ-Focus: Through Christ, God is building a living temple (Ephesians 2:19-22).
Implications: Let us join God's construction crew (1 Corinthians 3:10-17).
Questions: What are you building with your life? What kind of life does this building demand?
