The first part Exodus tells the story of how God rescued His people from slavery in Egypt. The Israelites had grown into a large nation, but Pharaoh feared them and made them slaves. God raised up Moses to lead them. Through Moses, God sent ten powerful plagues to show His power and to convince Pharaoh to let the Israelites go. Each plague revealed God's judgment on Egypt’s false gods and His care for His people. The final plague—the death of every firstborn—led to the first Passover, when God spared the Israelites who marked their doorposts with the blood of a lamb. These chapters show God’s sovereign control over history and His faithfulness to His covenant promises. It also points ahead to Christ, the true Passover Lamb, whose sacrifice frees believers from slavery to sin. God chooses and delivers His people by grace, not because of their works.
We enter into our rhythm of LEARN, READ, INTERACT.
From How to Read the Bible through the Jesus Lens, Michael Williams makes these points about Exodus:
Phrase: Deliverance into Presence
Theme: God delivers his people from slavery into his presence.
Christ-Focus: In Christ, God delivers his people from slavery to sin into fellowship with him (Romans 7:21-25).
Implications: We can trust in God's saving power to deliver us from sin's grip and into his saving presence (Romans 5:9-10).
Questions: Does the fact that you are a Christian feel like a burden (something to be delivered from) or deliverance? Do you feel like you're in the grip of God, or of sin?
