This week we conclude our journey through the wilderness as we finish the book of Numbers. Numbers 25–36 tells how God prepared His people to enter the Promised Land. Israel fell into sin at Peor by worshiping other gods and ignoring God’s commands. God judged their sin, showing that He cares about holiness. After this, God ordered Moses to take a second census of the people and gave laws for how the land would be divided among the tribes. God also chose Joshua to take Moses’ place, reminding Israel that leadership belongs to God, not human achievement. The tribes received instructions about offerings, vows, justice, and inheritance. Chapter 36 shows how God protects His promises by ensuring every tribe receives its portion of the land.
These chapters teach that God is sovereign—He chooses leaders, gives commands, and keeps His promises even when His people fail. Salvation and blessing are not earned by human effort but come from God’s faithful grace and covenant love.We enter into our rhythm of LEARN, READ, INTERACT.
From How to Read the Bible through the Jesus Lens, Michael Williams makes these points about Numbers:
Phrase: Promised Rest
Theme: God chastens his disobedient people but reaffirms his intent to bring them into the Promised Land.
Christ-Focus: Because Christ bore the penalty for our sin, we may enter into God's promised rest (Hebrews 4:3).
Implications: We must let God's discipline guide us to the peace and rest he intends for us (Hebrews 12:5-11).
Questions: In what ways have you already begun to know God's rest? What is keeping you from knowing God's rest more fully?
