This week we conclude our study of the sermon that is Deuteronomy. As the sermon ends, we hear more laws but then we hear a series of blessings and curses: blessings for obedience and curses for disobedience. The covenant is renewed, Joshua is named as Moses' successor, and Moses blesses the people before he dies. Note as well a small section of Chapter 31 that talks about the public reading of the law. What implication does that have for us today? Above all, don't miss God's faithfulness to his people, despite their current and future sin. What does that mean for us today? We enter into our rhythm of LEARN, READ, INTERACT.
From How to Read the Bible through the Jesus Lens, Michael Williams makes these points about Deuteronomy:
Phrase: Instruction
Theme: God gives Moses instructions for the second generation of Israel regarding faithful living in the Promised Land.
Christ-Focus: Christ perfectly fulfills the law, and so secures our relationship with God (Matthew 5:17).
Implications: We may now serve God confidently in the power of the Spirit of the one who fulfills the law, without fear of the penalty of the law (Romans 7:4-6).
Questions: What drives your relationship with God: fear or gratitude? Whose effort secures your relationship with God?
