Our journey through the wilderness continues as we look at Numbers 12-24, where we'll see how God continued to lead His people even when they rebelled. Miriam and Aaron challenged Moses, but God defended the leader He had chosen. The people complained again and refused to trust God when they faced hardship. Yet God remained faithful, providing guidance, food, and victory over enemies. When Balaam tried to curse Israel for Moab’s king, God turned his curses into blessings, showing that no one can oppose God’s will.
These chapters highlight God’s sovereignty and covenant faithfulness. Human sin and pride constantly threaten to break fellowship with God, but His grace preserves His people and His purposes. God’s promises do not depend on human faithfulness but on His steadfast character. Like Israel, believers today are called to trust in God’s leading, repent of unbelief, and rest in His unchanging mercy that secures their salvation and hope.
We enter into our rhythm of LEARN, READ, INTERACT.
From How to Read the Bible through the Jesus Lens, Michael Williams makes these points about Numbers:
Phrase: Promised Rest
Theme: God chastens his disobedient people but reaffirms his intent to bring them into the Promised Land.
Christ-Focus: Because Christ bore the penalty for our sin, we may enter into God's promised rest (Hebrews 4:3).
Implications: We must let God's discipline guide us to the peace and rest he intends for us (Hebrews 12:5-11).
Questions: In what ways have you already begun to know God's rest? What is keeping you from knowing God's rest more fully?
