This week we begin a 3-week journey through Deuteronomy, covering the first 9 chapters. Deuteronomy is a second giving of the law and the entire book serves as something of an extended sermon given to the Israelites as they prepared to enter the promised land. Moses the preacher or messenger from God recounts some of the history of their wilderness wanderings, reminds them of God's commands, and invites them to follow God's ways as they enter the land that God had promised them.
In Deuteronomy 1–9, Moses speaks to the Israelites before they enter the Promised Land. He reminds them of their history—how God rescued them from Egypt, guided them through the wilderness, and remained faithful even when they complained or disobeyed. Moses reviews the Ten Commandments and calls the people to love God with all their heart, soul, and strength. He warns them not to follow other gods or forget what God has done. Moses tells them that they are not receiving the land because they are better than other nations, but because of God’s promise to Abraham and His grace.
These chapters teach God’s sovereignty and covenant faithfulness. God chooses His people, rescues them, and provides for them—not because they deserve it, but because of His steadfast love. Obedience is a response to God’s grace, not a way to earn His favor. God saves, and His people are called to remember and trust Him.
We enter into our rhythm of LEARN, READ, INTERACT.
From How to Read the Bible through the Jesus Lens, Michael Williams makes these points about Deuteronomy:
Phrase: Instruction
Theme: God gives Moses instructions for the second generation of Israel regarding faithful living in the Promised Land.
Christ-Focus: Christ perfectly fulfills the law, and so secures our relationship with God (Matthew 5:17).
Implications: We may now serve God confidently in the power of the Spirit of the one who fulfills the law, without fear of the penalty of the law (Romans 7:4-6).
Questions: What drives your relationship with God: fear or gratitude? Whose effort secures your relationship with God?
