This is week 2 of our journey through Deuteronomy, covering chapters 10-21. In these chapters, Moses continues teaching Israel how to live as God’s covenant people. He reminds them that God chose them out of grace, not because they were better than other nations. Because of this, they are called to love God, obey His commands, and walk in His ways. These chapters include laws about worship, justice, leadership, family life, and how the people should treat the poor, foreigners, and vulnerable. God requires Israel to care for others because He first cared for them. Moses also explains how kings, priests, and prophets must serve under God’s authority, not their own.
These chapters show God’s sovereign grace, His concern for both holiness and justice, and His desire for His people to reflect His character in daily life. Obedience is a response to God’s saving love—not a way to earn it—and points forward to Christ, who perfectly fulfilled God’s law on our behalf. We enter into our rhythm of LEARN, READ, INTERACT.
From How to Read the Bible through the Jesus Lens, Michael Williams makes these points about Deuteronomy:
Phrase: Instruction
Theme: God gives Moses instructions for the second generation of Israel regarding faithful living in the Promised Land.
Christ-Focus: Christ perfectly fulfills the law, and so secures our relationship with God (Matthew 5:17).
Implications: We may now serve God confidently in the power of the Spirit of the one who fulfills the law, without fear of the penalty of the law (Romans 7:4-6).
Questions: What drives your relationship with God: fear or gratitude? Whose effort secures your relationship with God?
