In Exodus 33–40, God renews His covenant with Israel after their sin with the golden calf. Moses meets with God face-to-face in the Tent of Meeting, showing God's personal relationship with His people. God’s presence is central, demonstrated when His glory fills the newly built tabernacle. Israel carefully obeys God's instructions for the tabernacle’s construction, showing their renewed devotion. This section highlights God's mercy, faithfulness, and desire to dwell with His people despite their sin. This points to God's sovereign grace: salvation and relationship with Him are based on His initiative, not human effort. The detailed building of the tabernacle demonstrates that worship is according to God's commands, not human invention. The tabernacle itself points forward to Jesus Christ, Immanuel, "God with us," fulfilling God’s promise to live among His people in a fuller, perfect way.
We enter into our rhythm of LEARN, READ, INTERACT.
From How to Read the Bible through the Jesus Lens, Michael Williams makes these points about Exodus:
Phrase: Deliverance into Presence
Theme: God delivers his people from slavery into his presence.
Christ-Focus: In Christ, God delivers his people from slavery to sin into fellowship with him (Romans 7:21-25).
Implications: We can trust in God's saving power to deliver us from sin's grip and into his saving presence (Romans 5:9-10).
Questions: Does the fact that you are a Christian feel like a burden (something to be delivered from) or deliverance? Do you feel like you're in the grip of God, or of sin?
