This week, we will finish the gospel of Matthew. Chapters 16–28 focuses on Jesus’ mission to bring salvation through His death and resurrection. In Matthew 16, Peter declares Jesus is the Messiah, but Jesus quickly explains that His purpose is to suffer and die for sinners, taking the punishment we deserve. In Matthew 18, Jesus teaches about forgiveness and God’s grace toward His people, reflecting God’s covenant love. As Jesus enters Jerusalem (Matthew 21), He is welcomed as King, fulfilling Old Testament prophecy, but He is soon rejected by the religious leaders. His crucifixion in Matthew 27 shows the depth of human sin and God’s sovereign plan for redemption. Finally, Jesus’ resurrection in Matthew 28 proves His victory over sin and death, offering eternal life to His people. The Great Commission calls believers to spread the gospel, trusting God’s power and grace to bring others into His Kingdom.
Let's enter into our rhythm of LEARN, READ, INTERACT.
From How to Read the Bible through the Jesus Lens, Michael Williams makes these points about Matthew:
Phrase: Torah Fulfillment
Theme: Jesus is the new Moses who reinterprets Torah.
Christ-focus: Jesus fulfills the Torah of Moses (Matthew 5:17-20).
Implications: Our faith in Christ satisfies the demands of Torah (Romans 10:4-13).
Questions: Are you a good person? How good is good enough? Is there any use for the law of God in a Christian's life today?
