This week, we begin a 3-week trek through Numbers. In the original language, the title of the books was "In the Wilderness." Numbers 1–11 tells how God organized and led His people after freeing them from Egypt. God commanded Moses to take a census of the twelve tribes, arranging them around the tabernacle to show that God was at the center of their community. The Levites were set apart for priestly service, reminding Israel that access to God required holiness and mediation. As the Israelites traveled through the wilderness, God guided them with a pillar of cloud and fire, providing food (manna) and protection. Yet, the people repeatedly complained and rebelled, forgetting God’s faithfulness. As a theological theme, these chapters illustrate both human sinfulness and God’s sovereign grace—He disciplines His people but never abandons them. Moses’ intercession points to Christ as our greater Mediator, who prays for His people even when they fail. Numbers 1–11 ultimately reveals God’s faithfulness in shaping His redeemed people for worship, obedience, and trust in His promises.
We enter into our rhythm of LEARN, READ, INTERACT.
From How to Read the Bible through the Jesus Lens, Michael Williams makes these points about Numbers:
Phrase: Promised Rest
Theme: God chastens his disobedient people but reaffirms his intent to bring them into the Promised Land.
Christ-Focus: Because Christ bore the penalty for our sin, we may enter into God's promised rest (Hebrews 4:3).
Implications: We must let God's discipline guide us to the peace and rest he intends for us (Hebrews 12:5-11).
Questions: In what ways have you already begun to know God's rest? What is keeping you from knowing God's rest more fully?
