In Week 8, we will finish the letters of Paul by reading the rest of Ephesians and then his last four letters: Philippians, 1 Timothy, Titus, and 2 Timothy.
In Ephesians 4-6, Paul emphasizes unity in the church and encourages believers to live in a way that reflects their faith. He urges them to embrace kindness, humility, and forgiveness and provides guidance on relationships within families and between friends. He ends with the call to “put on the full armor of God” for spiritual strength.
In Philippians, Paul writes from prison, expressing joy and gratitude. He encourages believers to live humbly, like Christ, and to rejoice in all circumstances. Themes of perseverance, peace, and unity under Christ are central.
In 1 Timothy, Paul advises Timothy on leading a church, emphasizing sound doctrine, prayer, and good leadership, with a special focus on the behavior of church leaders.
Titus focuses on the gospel message, setting a good example, and encouraging Titus to teach sound doctrine, promote good deeds, and uphold integrity.
In 2 Timothy, Paul’s final letter, he urges Timothy to remain strong in faith, keep preaching, and prepare for challenges. Paul’s words reflect a deep commitment to the gospel and mentorship.
Let's enter into our rhythm of LEARN, READ, INTERACT.
From How to Read the Bible through the Jesus Lens, Michael Williams makes these points about Ephesians:
Phrase: Shalom
Theme: God establishes the church as the firstfruits of his shalom.
Christ-focus: Christ is our peace (Ephesians 2:14).
Implications: In the strength of the Spirit, let us imitate Christ by working toward peace (Ephesians 4:2-3).
Questions: Do you know peace in your life? Do others see peace in your life? Where do you look for peace?
From How to Read the Bible through the Jesus Lens, Michael Williams makes these points about Philippians:
Phrase: Joy
Theme: God gives resurrection power and joy in the face of persecution and heresy.
Christ-focus: In the face of crucifixion, Jesus was sustained by the joy set before him (Hebrews 12:2).
Implications: We can be sure that God will give us strength, and even joy, in the midst of the challenges that will come (Philippians 4:13).
Questions: What are the people, things, or circumstances that bring you joy? Can those people, things, or circumstances change?
From How to Read the Bible through the Jesus Lens, Michael Williams makes these points about 1 Timothy:
Phrase: Truth versus error
Theme: God encourages the (Ephesian) church in promoting the truth and opposing error.
Christ-focus: Just as Jesus revealed the truth about the Father, he charges and equips his followers to do the same (John 17:6-8, 17-18).
Implications: Let both our words and our actions promote truth and refute error (1 Timothy 4:11-12).
Questions: How do you distinguish truth from error? Which one does your life communicate more clearly? Which one does your congregation communicate more clearly? Are you willing and ready to stand for the truth?
From How to Read the Bible through the Jesus Lens, Michael Williams makes these points about Titus:
Phrase: Transformational Truth
Theme: God provides instruction to a young church leader regarding defending, speaking, and living out the truth.
Christ-focus: The words of Jesus are true words of life (John 6:33).
Implications: Let us hold firmly to the truth so that we are equipped to defend and promote the message of life (Titus 1:9).
Questions: Where does one find truth? How does one effectively communicate truth in a world where falsehood has been made to appear more attractive?
From How to Read the Bible through the Jesus Lens, Michael Williams makes these points about 2 Timothy:
Phrase: Loyalty
Theme: God appeals to Timothy and the churches to remain loyal to the gospel message in the face of persecution and error.
Christ-focus: In the face of persecution and error, Jesus remained faithful to the will of the Father (John 6:38).
Implications: Let us express our loyalty to Christ and the gospel message by learning and doing the will of the Father with the strength the Spirit provides (2 Timothy 1:13-14).
Questions: What truths are you willing to die for? What truths are you willing to live for?
