Genesis 15-30 tells the story of God’s covenant faithfulness to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. In Genesis 15, God makes a covenant with Abraham, promising him countless descendants and land. This highlights God's sovereignty in choosing and blessing His people (Romans 9:6-8). In Genesis 17, God gives circumcision as a sign of the covenant, foreshadowing baptism as the sign of belonging to God’s people (Colossians 2:11-12).
Isaac’s birth in Genesis 21 fulfills God’s promise, showing that salvation comes by God’s grace, not human effort (Galatians 4:23). Jacob, chosen over Esau (Genesis 25), illustrates God's election. In Genesis 28, Jacob's dream at Bethel confirms God's faithfulness despite human sin. Throughout, God works through flawed people, fulfilling His promises by grace alone, pointing to Christ, the true fulfillment of God’s covenant.
We enter into our rhythm of LEARN, READ, INTERACT.
From How to Read the Bible through the Jesus Lens, Michael Williams makes these points about Genesis:
Phrase: Separation for blessing
Theme: God separates out one through whom he would bless all nations.
Christ-Focus: Christ is the one through whom God would bless the nations (Acts 4:12).
Implications: As Christ's ambassadors, we are "separated out" with the task of blessing others with the good news of God's salvation in Jesus Christ (2 Corinthians 5:18-20).
Questions: In what ways has God equipped you to be a blessing to other people? Are Christians a blessing to you? What can you do to make yourself a clearer message of the good news of Jesus Christ to those around you?
