In Week 1, we will be introduced to the New Testament and enter into the Gospel of Luke. Luke 1-11 covers the early life of Jesus, His teachings, and His miracles. It begins with the birth of John the Baptist, who prepares the way for Jesus, and the miraculous birth of Jesus to Mary. These chapters emphasize God’s plan for salvation and His concern for the humble and the poor.
As Jesus grows, He begins His ministry by teaching about love, forgiveness, and the Kingdom of God. He chooses twelve disciples to follow Him. Through parables like the Good Samaritan, Jesus teaches compassion and care for others, especially those society rejects.
Jesus also performs many miracles, such as healing the sick, casting out demons, and calming a storm. These miracles show His divine power and compassion. In Luke 1-11, a key theme is that Jesus came for all people, regardless of their background, and calls His followers to live lives of love and service to others.
We enter into our rhythm of LEARN, READ, INTERACT.
From How to Read the Bible through the Jesus Lens, Michael Williams makes these points about Luke:
Phrase: Costly Saving
Theme: The Son of Man came to seek and to save what was lost.
Christ-Focus: Jesus came to give his life to bring life to sinners (Luke 22:19-20).
Implications: With the strength God provides, we must be ready to endure hardship to bring the gospel to the lost (2 Timothy 2:1-10).
Questions: How much would you pay for your salvation? Has your faith cost you anything? How much would you be willing to pay for someone else's salvation?
