In these chapters of 2 Samuel, we get an inside look at some of the dysfunctions in David's life and family and how those dysfunctions cause unrest in the life of Israel. The story of Amnon and Tamar was tragic in many ways, and the account of Absalom also has a tragic ending. In ancient times, a stable kingdom was rare as people were always looking to conquer other nations and control more land. For David, the instability came from within as Absalom tried in various ways to take control as king. Even as David eventually came to full power, his life and reign was marked by war, particularly with the Philistines. As you read, continue to read with the perspective of David as a man after God's own heart. What does that mean in light of what David experiences in these chapters? Be sure to check out the blog for the guiding questions as you read and for the opportunity to interact with each other. We enter our rhythm of LEARN-READ-INTERACT.
From How to Read the Bible through the Jesus Lens, Michael Williams makes these points about 1 & 2 Samuel:
Phrase: Exalted and humbled
Theme: God exalts the weak and humbles the proud.
Christ-Focus: God has exalted the humbled Christ (Philippians 2:5-11).
Implications: We should serve God in humility while we await our exaltation in Christ (James 4:10; 1 Peter 5:6).
Questions: What have you bragged about lately? Does the source of your pride focus on God, or on yourself?
