In Genesis Week 4, chapters 41-50 tell the story of how God used Joseph to save many people, including his own family. Joseph, once sold into slavery by his brothers, is raised up by God to become second in command in Egypt. When a famine spreads across the land, Joseph wisely manages food storage and helps Egypt and surrounding nations survive. His brothers come to Egypt looking for food, and Joseph eventually reveals his identity to them, choosing forgiveness instead of revenge. He explains that what they meant for evil, God used for good (Genesis 50:20), a clear statement about God's providence. Jacob (Israel), their father, comes to live in Egypt, blesses his sons, and then dies. Joseph also dies, trusting that God will one day bring His people back to the land He promised. These chapters show that God's sovereign plan unfolds even through hardship, guiding His people for their good and His glory.
Let's enter into our rhythm of LEARN, READ, INTERACT.
From How to Read the Bible through the Jesus Lens, Michael Williams makes these points about Genesis:
Phrase: Separation for blessing
Theme: God separates out one through whom he would bless all nations.
Christ-Focus: Christ is the one through whom God would bless the nations (Acts 4:12).
Implications: As Christ's ambassadors, we are "separated out" with the task of blessing others with the good news of God's salvation in Jesus Christ (2 Corinthians 5:18-20).
Questions: In what ways has God equipped you to be a blessing to other people? Are Christians a blessing to you? What can you do to make yourself a clearer message of the good news of Jesus Christ to those around you?
