In this second week of our Exodus reading, we will read how God led His people from Egypt to Mount Sinai and began shaping them into a holy nation. After rescuing Israel, God guided them with a pillar of cloud by day and fire by night. He parted the Red Sea so they could escape Pharaoh’s army. In the wilderness, God provided manna and water, showing His care and power. At Mount Sinai, He gave the Ten Commandments and His covenant laws, teaching Israel how to live as His chosen people. Notice God's sovereign grace in saving and guiding His people. God's law is not a way to earn salvation, but a response to His deliverance. As the Heidelberg Catechism says, we obey God's law out of gratitude (Q&A 86). God alone initiates the covenant and keeps it, showing that salvation is by His grace, not our works (Exodus 19:4-6; Romans 9:15-16).
We enter into our rhythm of LEARN, READ, INTERACT.
From How to Read the Bible through the Jesus Lens, Michael Williams makes these points about Exodus:
Phrase: Deliverance into Presence
Theme: God delivers his people from slavery into his presence.
Christ-Focus: In Christ, God delivers his people from slavery to sin into fellowship with him (Romans 7:21-25).
Implications: We can trust in God's saving power to deliver us from sin's grip and into his saving presence (Romans 5:9-10).
Questions: Does the fact that you are a Christian feel like a burden (something to be delivered from) or deliverance? Do you feel like you're in the grip of God, or of sin?
