In Week 16, we will finish the "John track" and finish our New Testament reading as we read through the rest of Revelation. While often known for its images of doom and destruction, a careful read of Revelation contains a message of hope.
Our readings this week give a powerful vision of God’s sovereignty, judgment, and ultimate victory. In Revelation 4-5, John sees God reigning on His throne, surrounded by worship. The Lamb, Jesus Christ, is the only one worthy to open the scroll of history, showing that salvation is by God’s grace alone. Chapters 6-19 describe the unfolding of God’s judgment, reminding us that He is just and will punish evil. Yet, in His mercy, He calls people to repentance. Revelation 20 speaks of Christ’s reign and final judgment, where the wicked are condemned, but believers, chosen by God’s grace, receive eternal life. Revelation ends with the new heavens and new earth, where God dwells with His redeemed people forever. This vision emphasizes God’s faithfulness, the perseverance of the saints, and Christ’s victory, fulfilling promises found throughout Scripture. As Revelation 22:20 declares, “Come, Lord Jesus!”—a prayer of hope in Christ’s return.
Let's enter into our rhythm of LEARN, READ, INTERACT.
From How to Read the Bible through the Jesus Lens, Michael Williams makes these points about Revelation:
Phrase: Ultimate Victory
Theme: God enables his people to stand fast against Satan and his forces until God brings about the ultimate and sure victory.
Christ-focus: The crucified Christ rose victorious over sin and death, and will destroy all dominion, authority, and power other than God's (1 Corinthians 15:20-28).
Implications: We are able to stand firm in God's strength until he brings about the ultimate victory for us through Jesus Christ (Revelation 5:9-10).
Questions: What gives you strength when evil seems overwhelming? What might God say in a letter to your congregation? Are you thirsty for the Lord's return?
