Books & Beyond
Activity Overview
Books & Beyond Reading Club is a volunteer-run community service initiative dedicated to providing free English reading enrichment courses to local school students in Hong Kong. The goal of BBRC is to arouse children’s passion for English reading, improve their social-emotional skills to cope with challenges and help them to build healthy relationships.
The duty of our Experiential Learning (EL) at Books & Beyond Reading Club is to provide face-to-face English storytelling activities in different local schools, including Interactive Storytelling classes and Reading Marathons. We also have Zoom classes with Dongguan Library in mainland China. We have visited 9 schools in different districts of Hong Kong, and participated in 26 English storytelling classes. Our team has a total commuting distance of 2513km, bringing the joy of learning English to 958 students from different schools.

Our Product
Sharing is caring, giving is receiving.
Final Product
The final product of our group is to establish a Chinese resource website, and the initial purpose of building a website is to provide a platform for our Chinese teachers with Chinese story resources, share teaching strategies and mutually exchange educational experiences. Therefore, our website consists of three sections: Chinese stories, Chinese lesson plan templates and forums.
Chinese Story Section
We have collected the electronic resources of Chinese stories. We classify them based on the six transdisciplinary unit themes of the IB PYP and use the learner profile as the training goal to refine the classification of resources.
Chinese Lesson Plan Template Section
We encourage Chinese teachers to upload Chinese game templates or other teaching resources for practising the Chinese language so that teachers can edit according to their teaching content. For example, the teacher can edit the template of the apple tree game according to the course content.
Forum Section
We shared some tips for making PPT, For instance, how we use the PPT cutout function to change the background, how we add animation on static story characters to make dynamic effects, etc.
We hope that more teachers will share their ideas in this forum, including teaching resources and strategies, as well as questions and concerns you encounter.
Sharing is caring and giving is receiving.
Let us work together to become professional and excellent Chinese teachers!
We enjoy our team work, communication, and collaboration. Each time we engage in reflection and creative thinking through pre-and post-class briefings.
We used Cantonese and English skills to support each team members and other volunteers.
We were first time adventurers interacting with the school and speaking our second language in front of 200-300 Hong Kong Primary students, it was a great way to practice as a risk-taker.
We are good at self-management, doing research after the Books and Beyond activities.
