About Books & Beyond Reading Club
As its name implies, BBRC is about reading storybooks and delivering meaningful lessons far beyond just “reading”. The volunteer-run organization provides a wide range of English reading initiatives at local schools to boost students’ passion of reading. The live and online classes are diversified, including but not limited to, Interactive Story-telling, Listening Drill for Examination, Reading Marathon, etc.
BBRC has conducted 1,030 Story-telling Zoom classes and partnered with 1,122 local school students. What is the mission beyond teaching the skills to read? It is the implicit moral lessons and social-emotional skills behind the storybooks that all students enjoy hearing from BBRC volunteers.
Group Sharing about BBRC & EL
Through all the activities, we have practised our communication skills, class management skills and problem-solving skills. Our group holds regular meetings and does self-reflection from time to time, which help us to improve our self-management ability and self-efficacy. EL gives us wonderful opportunities to explore the comprehensive IB learner profile, PYP transdisciplinary themes, ATL and learnt how to put theories into practice.
After finishing the EL course, we would like to thank Ms. Yen and Barbara for allocating and accepting us as BBRC volunteers. We also want to thank ourselves for the brilliant team work. None of the above beautiful memories could happen without our great corporation. EL will stop for the time being, but our life-long study is ongoing.

Our Group Activities
As a team of 6 HKU students, we felt very fortunate and grateful to be able to join the BBRC team in this EL course. During these five weeks, we have conducted both online & face to face lessons. Each of us has created 20 role-play scripts for BBRC. In addition, we also created a children's picture book “Wang Xiaoyue’s life” and a video of this book as our EL products. Additionally, we filmed a documentary video that aims at introducing BBRC to the general public.

Every Coin Has Two Sides.
Xiaoyue’s whole family is watching the news about the covid-19 status in Italy and they have a discussion. Apparently, Xiaoyue and her brother feel very upset because they cannot hang out with their friends as easily as before. But the parents see the issue from another perspective. The lockdown limits visitors from coming to Venice, so surprisingly, the environment gets better and the animals are happier than before.
