Elderly Center

H.K.S.K.H. St. Luke's Settlement Neighbourhood Elderly Centre is located in Kennedy Town. The center aims to provide diversified community supporting services for the elder residents nearby, for constantly enhancing their wellbeing, health, self-esteem, and encouraging their positive participation and contribution to society.

Our target group is a group of elderly people with various degrees of Dementia. Dementia is a general term for loss of memory, language, problem-solving, and other thinking abilities that are severe enough to interfere with daily life.

With the help of the staff of the centre, the three of us organised a series of activities titled "快樂一三五", which were carried out throughout the whole month. The mission of our activities is to help them alleviate their cognitive decline, deliver happiness, build up a positive mindset as well as do our best to help them to find their value in society.

What is the intention of making this picture book?

According to Hong Kong's Department of Health, as many as 100,000 elderly people, or nearly 10 percent of the elderly population, suffer from Dementia.

We came into contact with many elderly people with varying degrees of Dementia and symptoms at the elderly centre.

Our Chinese picture book is comprised of three stories with three elder characters. Our inspiration for these three characters came from those who we have met at the centre that suffer from different degrees of cognitive impairment.

We will use three heartwarming stories to let children know what it is like to be an elderly person with cognitive impairment, how to get along with them smoothly, and more importantly, what we can do to help them.
