IDEA EXPLORATION

Focused Inspiration board

You need to get inspired! This is one of my favorite stages. Basically you explore what is out there and possible directions you can go. Collect /research reference images, current designs, inspirational, blueprints etc. Basically find as many as you need, which is at least 20+ sources. I call this phase, the “Inspiration Board”.

Find 20+ focused images that will inspire your design. State the date

Annotate the Focused Inspiration Board

Annotate your inspiration board with thoughts and comments of the designs and resources.

Thoughts, Analysis, & Reflection

State the characteristics that you want to try to implement in your design based on design direction. Use images from your inspiration board and re-state your annotations and thoughts.

I like the longer cigarette body design

It should have a covered cabin

Either a single outboard engine or a 3d printed jet engine design.

*I also want to keep in mind how I will be assembling the boat and do not want to keep the design too complicated.

Write Design Objective

First write a brief design objective including details. This should be brief and concise. You should explain and justify what you are designing, and who is the client/ target audience.

*Keep in mind the design or concept should be ORIGINAL.

I will DESIGN and CREATE a RC high-performance powerboat with a classic V-bottom hull or a “Cigarette boat”. My initial thoughts are a modern take on a classic v-bottom cigarette boat. My plan is to use a RC outboard motor or a jet engine design which will drive my concept, but may change as my research unfolds. The boat model will be 18-24" in length. (Date)

I was inspired by a jet propulsion speed boat design and have changed my design. (Date)

Write a Design Objective Reflection

Try to answer these questions the best you can, with the as much detail you can. The more resources you find the less problems you will have down the road.

What problems do you foresee?

What possible supplies do you may need?
What skills do you need?

What Problems do you foresee?

I have never built any models and have never used the laser cutter.

Building the boat
What supplies do you need?

  • Wood Glue for Balsa

  • 3D Printed Jet Engine parts

  • Plastic Glue for 3d Printed Parts

  • Motor for jet engine

  • RC Receiver & Controller

  • Servo for steering w/ push rods

  • Water Proof Paint

  • 3 and 5 mm plywood panels.

  • Laser Cutter

  • Sand papers

  • Polyester resin

  • White wood glue

What skills do you need?

  • How do I 3d print my model?

  • How do I set up the electronics for an RC boat?

  • How do I use the laser cutter to cut balsa?

Possible resources to be used for this project (4+ resources)

Find 4+ resources to help support your project direction. This could be videos, tutorials, books, films, or websites.

How to design a stable high-speed boat was a very good resource for design the front chine of the boat and how it displaces water.

This was a good intro video on the types of hulls.

This video gave me an idea of rc boat construction.

Just found this . . . Very Cool!
