This was my first original origami design. I did not design an original base for this one - instead, I used point-splitting techniques on the standard birdbase, with the head of the crane splitting into the two cephalic lobes and the back of the crane splitting into two small dorsal fins. My brother, Nathan, bought a wood carving of a manta ray while vacationing in Mexico. He knew I was thinking about trying to create my own original origami designs, and he said he bought the carving because he thought a manta ray would be a good subject. I agreed with him and found a picture online which was more anatomically correct than the carving, which was highly stylized.
