Aim: This task reviews a range of assessment-related practices
Time: 5 - 10 minutes, approximately
Assessment is an integral part of teaching and learning activities. Assessment is commonly seen as an opportunity to distinguish between success and failure, and to grade learners’ performance. However, assessment activities also offer opportunities to learn about and evaluate our own teaching. But first, what exactly is assessment? Boyd et al. (2019) define assessment as
“Gathering information in order to make judgements which provide the basis for action."
Different types of assessment can be described in relation to the kind of feedback it provides. Five common assessment practices are described below. Drag the assessment practice to the correct definition.
Five more common assessment practices are described below. Drag the assessment practice to the correct definition.
Assessment makes more difference to the way that learners spend their time, focus their efforts and perform, than any other aspect of the course they study. If we want to make learners’ coursework better, providing assessment is crucial.
