Aim: This task asks you to apply what you have learned in this module to your own online teaching context.
Time: 30 – 45 minutes, approximately
Here we ask you to reflect on what you have learned in this third module and how you could apply this to your teaching context. Look at the questions below and make notes on your reflections. You could keep your notes in a written, audio or video ‘learning diary’ to refer to during - and after! - the course.
Which of the strategies in this module could you use to promote effective independent learning in your learners? How would you use these strategies with your learners? Would you use the strategies online, or in the F2F physical classroom, or both?
Choose an upcoming lesson in your workbook/coursebook. Look at each of the exercises in the lesson, and decide which ones you could carry out
a) in a live online class e.g. in WhatsApp or via video conferencing;
b) in the F2F physical classroom; and
c) asynchronously for homework, with learners working independently at home.
Look closely at the activity/activities you decided to set your learners for homework in point c) above. How could you provide them with help online, if they need it? Which activities would you give feedback on, and where and how would you give this feedback?
Choose one activity from your workbook/coursebook that you plan to have learners carry out independently and asynchronously, as homework. How could you use this activity to also support them to become more independent learners?
Share a photo of your chosen workbook/coursebook activity and your idea for promoting learner independence in the WhatsApp group - via text or a VoiceNote!
In this module (Task 3.4), we asked you to rate yourself as an independent learner via a short quiz. Look at the quiz again (below), but this time, consider how good your learners currently are at learning independently. Choose the most appropriate column for the majority of your learners.
We hope that this module has given you some ideas for helping your learners to become even more independent!
