Aim: This task introduces the 4C’s and to explore the myths and misconceptions associated with online learning.
Time: 20-30 minutes
The 4C’s (Communication, Critical Thinking, Collaboration and Creativity) are ‘new competencies’ which society is increasingly demanding of its citizens. The ‘4Cs’ model is based on the assertion that 21st century challenges will demand these learning and innovation skills to cope with the challenges that lie ahead, in addition to competency in core subject skills, social and cross-cultural skills and a proficiency in languages. The 4C’s framework is a tool for mapping out activities and for maximising potential in all subject areas, at any level and at any age.
Find out more about the 4C’s by listening to the presentation below. Click on the audio icon on each slide to listen. The audio transcript for this task is in the downloadable PDF at the bottom of this webpage.
What have you learned about the 4C's? Look at the slides below, and choose the correct heading for each description.
During this course, we’ll be looking at activities and ideas for incorporating the 4C’s into your own online lessons, so that you aren’t just teaching your subject in an engaging way. You are teaching your subject in a way that deepens understanding and helps your learners (of whatever age) develop the 4C’s.
A key part of learning is being willing to challenge your assumptions about a topic. In this task, you are invited to reflect on commonly held misconceptions about online learning.
Read the statements and decide whether you agree or disagree with each. Read the feedback you receive when you answer to help you reflect on each statement. Try the activity again from a different perspective to help you consider both sides of the argument. You might find you come away thinking differently!
