The Railway Company took over the struggling Manx Northern Railway following negotiations the previous year.

With the expansion of services two new locomotives were ordered, becoming No.10 G.H. Wood and No.11 Maitland supplied as previous motive power from Beyer, Peacock & Co., of Gorton inManchester.

Two batches of new saloon carriages (F.29 - F.32 and F.36 - F.36) were delivered from the Metropolitan Carriage & Wagon Co., of Saltley in Birmingham as well as half-brake carriages F.33 - F.34 from the same supplier; the inconsistency in numbering occured because of the delivery dates; all saloons remain today while the other two carriages have since been scrapped.
