Amber is a unique natural material formed from the fossilized sap of ancient trees. At Kuji Amber Land, you can explore amber that is around 85 million years old.
The museum shows how tree sap, once exposed to air, would trap insects and bubbles. Over millions of years, it hardened and turned into amber. These trapped inclusions make each piece a small window into prehistoric times.
Kuji is the only place in Japan where natural amber is actively mined. For many generations, amber has shaped the town's industry, craftsmanship and identity. Today it continues to connect Kuji to nature, history and the prehistoric world.
Amber from Kuji is usually golden or honey-brown in color. It feels warm and smooth, and some pieces are slightly transparent. You may find small insects, plants, or air bubbles inside them.
Because it is soft, amber can be carved into many things like jewelry, keychains, or even large artworks. The museum features beautiful pieces, including murals and sculptures made entirely from amber.
Mining Experience
Visitors are taken by van to a nearby site where they dig for amber using tools. You can keep what you find, unless it is a fossil or a very large piece. It’s recommended to bring sunscreen, a hat, and water, especially in summer.
Museum and Artworks
The museum is divided into two buildings. Inside, you’ll find detailed exhibits about how amber is formed, and see real pieces with insects or bubbles trapped inside. There are also impressive amber artworks on display.

Handcraft Workshops
At Kuji Amber Land, you can enjoy a variety of creative experiences.
In the Amber Jewel-making Workshop, you get to cut and polish a small piece of amber into a shiny bead.
If you prefer something wearable, the Accessory Workshop lets you design and make your own amber necklace or pendant.
For something more playful, the Kaleidoscope-making activity allows you to fill a scope with colorful amber fragments and beads, creating shifting patterns as you turn it.
For younger visitors, the Ammonite Excavation is a hands-on experience where you can excavate real fossils from a sandbox.

In my opinion, Kuji Amber Land is absolutely worth visiting, especially if you’re nearby or can fit it into your schedule. You can stop by for just an hour or spend the whole day there, depending on how much time you have.
I went in the morning and had a great experience: mining amber myself, slowly enjoying the exhibitions, making a necklace with my girlfriend and ending the experience by exploring the old mine. There’s a lot to do and learn, and it pairs perfectly with an evening trip to the nearby coast, Kitayamazaki or Kosode for example.
