In 1968, the mayor of Odate city, Yoshio Ishikawa, suggested doing Daimonji yaki, and it was held at Houou Mountain for the first time. Since then, this festival has been held as a memorial service for the deceased and to pray for the safety and health of the citizens of Odate. It had been held on the lunar Bon festival day, but now, it is held on August 111th since it was decided as a national holiday, mountain day.
Daimonji Festival is held on August 11th every year. In the daytime, women clad in colorful yukata dance Daimonji-odori. When the sun starts to set, the fireworks are set off by the Nagaki River. At the same time, the character ‘大’ is lit up on the Houou Mountain, which is located in the east of the city. This is to pray for the development of Odate city. There are other Daimonji festivals in other areas of Japan, Odate's Daimonji is the biggest of all.
