This project was inspired by a photo book about Daiyaki pottery, which has continued since the Meiji era in Hanamaki City, Iwate Prefecture. I was deeply moved by the words and presence of Mr. Hoshu Sugimura, the fifth-generation potter of Daiyaki. Through this project, I introduce his studio, his works, and the atmosphere that surrounds his craft.
The studio changes beautifully with the seasons, and each piece is carefully handmade. Watching Mr. Sugimura at work, I felt the quiet strength of human hands and the warmth of traditional craftsmanship.
With soft music playing and coffee breaks in between, Mr. Sugimura welcomes visitors with kindness and sincerity.
Inspired by the photo book created in March 2024 by Saki Morikawa of the Hanamaki City Regional Revitalization Cooperation Team, I created this project in hopes of sharing the charm and spirit of Daiyaki with more people.
私は、岩手県花巻市で明治時代から続く台焼きについての写真集に感動し、今回取り上げることにしました。
五代目・杉村芳舟さんの言葉や佇まいに強く心を動かされ、工房や作品、そしてそのまわりに流れる空気を、自分なりに紹介しています。
工房は季節ごとに表情を変え、器は一つひとつ丁寧に手作業で作られていきます。
作陶の様子を見て、人の手が持つ静かな力と、伝統の中にある温かさを感じました。
作業の合間に流れる音楽と、コーヒーの時間。杉村さんは、訪れる人にいつも温かく接してくださいます。
2024年3月に花巻市地域おこし協力隊の森川咲さんが制作された写真集に感化され、台焼きの魅力とその想いが、もっと多くの人の心に届くようにと、心を込めてこのページを作りました。
The story and Charm of Dai-yaki Porcelain
台焼き陶磁器の歴史と魅力
Dai-yaki originated in the hot spring region of Hanamaki City and stands out as a rare form of porcelain in the Tohoku area, where earthenware is more commonly produced. Although the region had access to high-quality pottery stone, the material had a high iron content, making it difficult to achieve the pure white finish typically associated with porcelain.
台焼きは、陶器が主流の岩手県花巻市の温泉地で生まれた珍しい磁器です。高品質な陶石が採れる地域でしたが、鉄分が多く含まれていたため、磁器特有の白さを出すのが困難でした。
Daiyaki (台焼き) began in 1895 (Meiji 28), founded by Kanbe Sugimura, a native of Dai Onsen, a part of the Hanamaki hot spring area. The name "Daiyaki" comes from this place name.
台焼きは、1895年（明治28年）、花巻温泉郷の一部である台温泉出身の杉村勘兵衛によって始められました。地名にちなんで「台焼き」と名付けられました。
Before that, the area had produced Yunosawa ware (also known as Ozegawa ware) from 1873 to 1888. Sugimura reopened the remains of an old kiln and attempted to produce porcelain using local clay.
以前この地域では、1873年（明治6年）から1888年（明治21年）まで湯の沢焼（尾瀬川焼）が焼かれていました。杉村勘兵衛はその窯跡を利用して磁器の生産を始めました
Daiyaki as a Regional Symbol
地域の名産となった台焼き
Following this, in 1923 (Taisho 12), the official opening of Hanamaki Onsen brought more attention to Daiyaki. It began to be sold as a souvenir and became a representative ceramic product of the region. During the Showa period, pottery versions of Daiyaki were also produced and sold at local inns.
その後、1923年（大正12年）の花巻温泉の開業により、台焼きは温泉土産として親しまれ、地域を代表する陶磁器となりました。昭和時代には陶器の台焼きも作られ、旅館などで販売されました。
Features of Daiyaki
台焼きの特徴
Daiyaki is distinguished by its warm, cream-colored base and elegant blue-and-white designs. Unlike the pure white porcelain often found elsewhere, Daiyaki carries a subtle earthiness reflective of its local clay and history.
台焼きは、柔らかいクリーム色の地肌と上品な青白磁の絵柄が特徴です。他産地の真っ白な磁器とは異なり、地元の土を活かした素朴な味わいが魅力です。

Originally envisioned by the third-generation artisan Ryosuke, the holly motif was later brought to life by the fourth-generation Tatsuro as a delicate, floral-inspired design. The pattern symbolizes protection and the warding off of evil spirits.
〈柊（ひいらぎ）〉
三代目・良介が着想し、四代目・龍郎によって柔らかな花紋として表現された柊の意匠。魔除けの意味が込められています。
Blue and White Landscape Confectionery Bowl with Lid This elegant lidded bowl features a traditional blue-and-white landscape motif, showcasing the refined artistry of Kanbē Sugimura, founder of the Daiyaki tradition. Created in the early 20th century, the piece reflects both technical innovation and regional character.
初代・勘兵衛 作 染付山水文蓋付菓子器 台焼きの創始者・杉村勘兵衛による、染付の山水文が描かれた蓋付きの菓子器です。20世紀初頭に制作された本作は、地域色と技術革新が融合した代表作として知られています。

This design, passed down since the time of the first-generation Kanbē, features four motifs: sunrise, pine trees, two boats, and a coastal fence—capturing the deep yearning for the sea felt in that era.
〈海図（かいず）〉
初代・勘兵衛の時代から受け継がれてきた意匠。日の出、松、二艘の舟、海岸線の柵という四つの絵柄に、当時の海への憧れが込められています。
