Akita Inu(=dog in Japanese) is an original breed in Akita prefecture in Japan. They used to be called “Akita Matagi Inu” which accompany and help bear and deer hunters. Later on, Samurai and wealthy farmers started keeping them as a watchdogs since the Edo period. It is said that Satake, a head family in the Akita region, held dog fighting in order to motivate the combative spirits of subordinate warriors. As time progressed, there were more mixed breeds with Akita Inu and other kinds of dogs. Some people in Odate found it concerning. They began the Akita Inu Preservation Movement to maintain the inheritance of pure Akita Inu. In response to the Odate people’s effort, Akita Inu was designated a natural monument in 1930. As of 2021, the number of Akita Inu in Japanese households is 3469, which is gradually decreasing over the past decade.
1)Physical traits
They are known for their curled tail, sturdy body structure, and upright ears. These are perfect features to survive the cold winter in Akita.
2)Personality
One of the most famous characteristics of Akita Inu is its loyalty. The well-known true story of “Hachi-co”, the Akta Inu which kept waiting for his bereaved owner for ten years at Shibuya station tells a lot about this breed. As a hunter’s dog, they are also very brave but calm. Some people also describe Akita Inu as stubborn, as they sometimes stop walking during a walk, just because they don’t want to walk anymore.
