Joshitei Garden 如斯亭(じょしてい) originated from the Genroku era (元禄) and was once the garden to Satake Yoshimasa from 1688 to 1704. The garden was maintained by Yoshikazu, the 9th Daimyo or Feudal Lord. It is said that he was like a famous prince. Thus, the garden ended up being named “Joshi-tei” after Yoshikazu. This garden is known as one of the most famous gardens in Tohoku. It is not only a place of rest for the feudal lords of the past, but also a place where many writers and artists frequently visited. Joshitei was designated as a national scene spot in 2007. Since 2014, it has been restored and maintained to preserve the historical materials of the garden. Joshitei Garden has been restored to its former appearance and opened to the public as a beautiful Japanese garden in the heart of Akita City.
The garden is characterized as both a stroll garden and a viewing garden. The garden features small waterfalls and a stream that represents the wishes of Satake Yoshimasa. The flow of water in the garden is influenced by Taoism where one should continue to learn for the rest of their lives. The garden also has abundant features including unusual rocks, lanterns, and a tea house.
