During the early Showa period, spanning the 1930s, the skilled artisan Mr. Mintaro Kano made a significant contribution to the world of lacquerware by producing exquisite examples of Akita-nuri. However, this era of artistic creation was abruptly interrupted by the ravages of war, leading to a cessation of Kano's masterful work. Despite the challenges faced during that tumultuous time, the legacy of his craftsmanship endures, and visitors can still marvel at Kano's timeless creations displayed at the Akita Red Brick Museum.
The roots of traditional lacquerware in Japan run deep, with a history stretching back approximately 9000 years, as evidenced by the discovery of lacquered vessels from the Jomon period. Throughout the centuries, this ancient art form has played a pivotal role in adorning a diverse array of materials, including stone and wood. Across the archipelago, a myriad of techniques has evolved, giving rise to an extensive spectrum of lacquerware products, each reflecting the unique regional flavors and artistic expressions of Japan.
Akita-nuri, a distinctive form of lacquerware, showcases unique techniques like "Togidashi" and "Bakanuri." The "Togidashi" method involves grinding the surface, creating captivating patterns on the vessel. Meanwhile, the renowned "Bakanuri" technique highlights the exceptional qualities of Akita Urushi, the lacquer used. Through these methods, Akita-nuri exemplifies the region's commitment to preserving and advancing this art form with innovative and time-honored approaches.
