Orientation to Master’s Studies
Study Culture in LET
Table of Contents
Culture is a process
"Humans acquire culture through the learning processes of enculturation and socialization", from this session's slides
This definition made me think about my own enculturation in Finland, how exhausting it was in the beginning to do everything, from going to the supermarket to figuring out how the trash bins work. I had to learn everything from scratch.
How can this be transferred into an educational setting? What is learning and study culture?
What does learning and study culture revolve?
In our discussion with my group, we shared thoughts such as:
being open and honest about what you know and do not know
being ethical with your work - don't cheat
contributing equally to group work - being responsible and not letting others do the work for you
respecting people's opinions - being open minded especially in multi-cultural learning environments
learning from others
We also talked about how learning and study culture in the university involves many informal learning activities as well as opportunities for building communities and connecting with people, such as student organizations, guilds and the activities that they organize.

offer help, take care of others when someone is struggling
"Think broader - we are material people in material spaces, we experience spaces in different ways.
Include informal learning as well, not only formal"
This prompt by Riikka, our Teacher Tutor who was referring to our personal learning environments, really stuck to me and I try to observe my experiences
The students' perspective is really important in developing future LET stedies
In the degree committee they discuss topical issues e.g.curriculum development, and there are also student members from the 2nd year.
It is a committee for organizing Master's studies, decision-making in university.
There are chances of getting involved and learning more about how the university operates if someone is interested.
Feedback day in spring:
All feedbacks are collected and talked about, there are both 1st year and 2nd year students
Curriculum development is done together with the researchers.
Current topic of discussion:
Opening up courses for continuous learning
Creating smaller units that will be taken up as MOOCS
