Another Iterations: The Sense and the Differed in Alejandro González Díaz
© By Abdel Hernández San Juan
“I’m no longer interested in whether the viewer is the one who creates and shapes the work through their interpretation, or whether the work, through its own language, creates the viewer, providing them with the opportunity to form a thought. I believe that between the work and the viewer there is a medium, an empty space where a certain kind of experience takes place. At this point, I could say that the aesthetic event occurs in that invisible and imprecise space.”
Entry: Support codes
Crumple the support, squeeze it, fold it, deform it is, in a certain way, if we adhere to a certain structural semantics, in the sense of Greimas, to deny the format.
If in alphabetic vocabulary, a structural semantics is founded on pre-given presuppositions, the fact that words already bring meanings that we recognize in turn in them and in the conventions of culture outside of language, when we acquire the language, for example, we must accept these pre-given meanings, then, beyond the alphabet, in the mere squeezing of a support, without yet resorting to the presence of the alphabetic text in a good part of the visual art of Alejandro González Díaz, which we will see later, it is implicit how the support has been habitually encoded in the visual arts where it is accepted.
On the one hand, the usual support is signified by phrases such as “presentation”, “exhibition”, “display”, “exhibition”, which link their pre-given meaning to the spatiality of the museum or the exhibition hall as syntagmatic spatialities, as well as to a certain idea of spectator, recipient or receiver.
But the support also, in its phatic dimension, in its immediate thingness, presupposes being the basis of something where some “sign”, “message”, “expression”, “idea”, “embodiment” or “representation” will be unfolded, if it is writing the page, of paper or virtual, the ink or the digit; if it is painting, the pigment or some plastic material.
Crumpling the support then seems to be a negation of these previously mentioned codes, at least of the format.
A genealogy
It is true, however, that the exploration with the principle of the support, not seeing it as a mere means or instrumental vehicle for other purposes, but focusing on it, can be read, interpreted and understood from a certain genealogy in art itself.
In analytical and synthetic cubism, the deconstructive exploration of the relationships between background and figure led to exchanges between planes of the figure and planes of the background that altered our usual sense of that surface which is the support, resulting in the imagination of a certain becoming of the whole of the painting in assembled fragments.
In the transition from two-dimensional to three-dimensional, this led to an understanding of the support as an assembly of parts that were not always thought of as neutral parts of a mere instrumental medium, but as exchanges between the materiality of the support itself and forms of symbolism born from it that began to add semantic senses and meanings to the support itself.
In abstractionism, explorations like Mondrian's treated the support not as a metaphysical convention of a representation, but as a surface and planes that participated as much as the added lines in the composition of a designed whole.
The surface as a support, once in the plastic arts, an illusory plane of a representation, lost in the distant depths of a secondary medium, as occurred in Renaissance perspective, or with the medieval allegorical sense, thus began to move to the foreground as a phatic dimension, to be perceived as an abstract event of matter and accidents in itself, progressively acquiring its own semantic dimension that could itself add senses or meanings, whether these were abstract, by way of matter itself, as occurred with the material abstractionism of Antonie Tapies, or whether they referred to a certain sense of that whole understood as an exploration of the artifactual dimension.
Precedents
But the genealogy of this shift to the foreground of the surface or support that is that canvas, versus its meaning as a mere means for a representation, can be found not only in the evolution of art, but also in Alejandro González Díaz himself.
Before literally altering our usual sense of the support through squeezing, some plastic works by this valuable young Cuban artist were already exploring that sensory proximity of the canvas understood as a surface, of the support treated as semantic matter capable of participating decisively in the senses or meanings of the work.
Some of the artist's pieces were already raw canvases where what we had before our eyes was nothing other than that literal empty canvas, without images captured, as happens in his piece "The Darkest Days", where the canvas appears empty, in raw linen canvas as it is acquired directly in art stores, with barely the text written at the meeting of the vertical and horizontal lines on the right, sometimes with barely in a corner or below the sudden appearance in a fragment of some image that seems to emerge or arise from that raw linen as its background or its atmosphere, in others the literal empty canvas, with its natural accidents even sometimes with solitary alphabetic typographic texts printed directly on the mere raw support as for example in works such as S/T painting on paper from 2021 or "Unconfessable", but even more so in "Breaks", where the text "distortion" appears written on a raw canvas already subtly folded, wrinkled or intentionally not quite adjusted or well stretched on the frame, or in "Indecipherable".
There are even pieces in this series that literally play with the format, such as "Traffics," whose circular format reminds us of the old Tondo, and where the written text is illegible. We also have in Alejandro some paintings on cardboard that already began, although still in a moderate way, the scrunching of the support, a principle that, not without reason, can also be observed at the semantic level in more object-based works where the scrunching is the wrapping itself or the packaging that holds or transports small piles of elements that we assume are coins but are linked to other objectified scrunchings of similar size and appearance, such as pages of paper with written texts crumpled for being discarded.
In none of those previous pieces, however, did the exploration of how the support or surface participates in the senses and meanings take center stage, with the whole of the painting becoming an exploration of the artifactual dimension, as in pieces made by Alejandro in collaboration with Jeny Casanueva, then his partner; I am referring to works that suggested the idea of a painting within another painting and that, literally treated as artifacts, included allusions that addressed the painting as a window with the idea even of clubs that close the window and from which one usually looks.
There is undoubtedly in all this a critique of the metaphysics of representation that leads the subject towards a conceptualist tautology, self-referential towards the code of the work, beyond the mere abstractionist negation of representation.
I will return to some of these works later because, although Alejandro González Díaz's visual work has been greatly refined towards an art that is increasingly interested in the sensory, it is still difficult and unavoidable today to ignore that he is undoubtedly a conceptual artist.
But the more recent crumpled and enameled works that focus my attention here certainly cannot be reduced entirely, or at all their semiological levels of interpretation, to a mere intentional play with the codes of the support, or the surface. The meanings radiated by pieces like the one with the little bags, where the crumpling resembles a wrapping or the packaging of some coins, make us aware of how, in all this exploration of the material of the work, there is also a meaning that sought, more in the past than today, to look towards the "work of art" understood as an object not only in its material thingness as a placeable, locatable, transportable object, traversable in its surroundings, but also in the semiological sense of a language/object and, even more so, as something objectified in the visual traffic as interchangeable according to criteria of value in a socioculturality understood objectively, that is, relatively externalized out there, objectified, seen by the artist as governed by exchanges of values, as well as in a circuit that encompasses production, distribution, and consumption.
I am referring here to past object-based works, such as “Exchange Values”, created in Madrid in 2015, where Alejandro related on one side the sculptural image of the Virgin with her halo, referring to “pure”, pristine, religious values, versus transparent glass bottles filled with powdered substances.
I am also referring to the reference in the work to the wrinkled wrappings or packaging of objects, although Alejandro González Días has also dealt literally with the subject of the coin, as for example in his piece "Dismantling History", which is a digital print, and which reflects different angles of sculptural bas-reliefs of historical figures as they appear reflected or can be captured from detailed close-ups on coins, by looking towards the supposedly historical values that the figures are meant to symbolize, from the coin as a value of exchange, Alejandro called into question the historical text itself, relativizing it through its fetish value symbolized in the coin.
In “exchange value” the work of the little bags, it was not only a literal allusion to the money that can be found, we must assume, although it is not shown, in the internal contents of the bags of one half of the piece, but also a relationship between this and the second half of the piece, this time pages full of writings, as I said before, which seem to have been discarded, crumpled as if ready to be thrown in the trash, but shown or displayed as objects/volumes and placed in a row just like the little bags, a two-sided relationship that in that work refers us less to literal money or even to the exchange or use value, proper to a literal sense of economy, market or monetary or value exchange, and more to the textualist and semiological notion of writing economy, the so-called scriptura.
And this notion of scriptura, fully linked to culture considered as a textual economy, which sees or looks towards the object as already objectified where it circulates, is exchanged, or where it is equivalent to something else that may be in its place, or in the place of which that object is found, offers us a peculiar path of interpretation that, returning to the recent works of Alejandro, his crushed and enameled supports, puts at the center not the conventions of art, but rather the artist's reflections on implicit paradoxes when we think of notions such as code, interference, decoding, interruption, indeterminacy, noise, illegibility, etc.
Thus, the textual in those captured from the squeezing, now understood as scripturas, and in its accentuated analogy with writing as a deferred message, refers us to a visual reflection on the paradoxes and complexities of the object in its relation to the legible and the illegible, the interruptions in communication, the indeterminacies of meaning, or as I said, the noise or the zero degree of information, the annulment versus the decoding of the message or the communication of the work of art versus entropy, something that largely takes these pieces beyond the tautological self-referentiality of art about art, to inscribe the latter in a general sense of code, thus being more of an investigation into the inscriburality of the sign/object code in the general framework of the relationship work/exchange of values, work/spectator understood against the background of contemporary visual culture.
Deferred meaning and iteration
The relationship with writing, although not the central focus nor the direct subject of these works, is present here as if in the background, but inclusive; they are not works about writing, or concerning it, but they do address questions about the sense and meaning in the work of art as a visual object, which require understanding certain things that become more obvious with writing, in order to better grasp what it is really about now in the visual plastic language, that is, to grasp in an integral way what the crucial points are to understand in the new research of Alejandro González Díaz.
I'm referring here to the concept of deferral, which Alejandro uses in one of his explanations. Understanding this sense of the deferred message or of what is deferred in the object is crucial to grasping where the artist's search is leading him with these pieces.
““I don’t intend to keep anything fixed,” Alejandro maintains in this regard; “all my work proposes nothing but to go towards a place; all my work always means something else. My work is like a deferred text, it constantly surpasses itself, its limits are erased, it spills over.”
Alejandro González Días
Although Alejandro González Díaz's art frequently uses alphabetic writing, the written text, this attention and prevalence has gone through different moments that greatly deserve our attention.
Trying to trace this matter in reverse, that is, from its current developments to its previous antecedents and descendants, it is necessary to resort to a kind of replacement or substitution that writing is progressively acquiring in his visual work, since, by far, Alejandro's art has continually resorted to central alphabetic texts that have sometimes been concepts/words and other times even conceptual paragraphs, where the whole work as a whole has revolved around the written text, mainly in its content, although no less in its script or its form.
Let us first see what this awareness of deferral presupposes for writing.
First. Jacques Derrida, in his critique of Austin's speech acts, argued that performatives in Austin's linguistics required ideal speakers, who are facing each other in a situation of enunciation and counter-enunciation, where the utterance immediately receives its other, who has it face to face as speech, with its context of enunciation and self-centered subjects in the presence of themselves and their other.
In contrast, writing, inscribed on a material, is usually done in self-absorbed solitude. Inscription on a material transforms it, in one sense, into a graphic representation, a grapheme, but in another sense into a "message," a "missive," something whose recipient is omitted, not present, but imagined as something that is never entirely remittable to a specific other, nor to a clearly contextualized communicative situation.
The other is found as if already uttered, and thus the act of communication itself remains perpetually postponed, deferred once again. Derrida called this deferred dimension “iteration.”
When we talk about deferral in Alejandro Gonzáles Días, we are not referring to writing, but to the deferral of communication in other media, in this case the visual plastic language. Just as in writing the visual artwork is created in a condition of imaginary audience, the work in the process of creation is directed or oriented, or at least presupposes even an imaginary future interpretant, an other always deferred, whose tangibility is never entirely remittable to a context or a situation of enunciation, and counter-enunciation, where the ideal speakers are each one recipient and sender of an exchange, one in the presence of the other, where one elucidates what the other directs to him and responds by making himself explicit, seen in this way the work always remains as sent to an anticipated other as its imagined and imaginary “interpretant” and the concretizing act of a spectator always remains in a certain way beyond the reach of both the author and the work, as well as the interpretive processes that are then unleashed around it on the side of the creator and on the side of cultural hermeneutics.
The work of Alejandro González Díaz, especially in these more recent explorations, is, as he himself maintains, a kind of "deferred text," but not every artist necessarily notices it, emphasizes it, or makes it the awareness of a way of understanding art, its reason for being and its meanings, in the exploration of that deferred dimension.
Alejandro, like few others, is immersed in how this iteration becomes heuristically explorable in the order of meaning. The artist speaks of a tentative exploration, a groping search in the dark, exploring what happens or how to understand "meaning" and "significations" when we emphasize this iterated dimension, when, by focusing on it, the work itself turns in that direction. It is then a question of what happens with the interpretive activity, and what happens with the ways of imagining the relationship that goes from the creative process to the work, and from the work to the spectator.
On the one hand, this iteration can be interpreted through the very negation we observed at the beginning of this essay in Alejandro's works. Here, we would be dealing with understanding that negation of the support as a way of denying the presence of the work and, as such, as a deferred meaning that utters an identity and a conclusion—the negated presence, at least in its usual form, of something shown as a result that unfolds in its entirety as an act of presentation of what is represented, embodied, painted, or completed, as a whole that encloses within itself a uniqueness, expressed from a self-centered intentionality that wants to say this and not that. This can be grasped here as a postponement or revocation of a postponement; it is as if the postponed work were being shown.
Second. A sign does not obtain or acquire its identity from itself, but from another sign that precedes and follows it in a chain. If we go far enough here, it is as if, in a sense, the work were born not from the signs that make up the chain of its enunciation, but rather from the differential spaces between sign and sign, something that would be nothing other than “difference” according to Derrida.
That is to say, a sign is what it is due to its relationship with another sign, that is, in relation to what it "is not," and that which it "is not" as a sign is not situated in one sign nor in the other, but between both, in the difference, in a space that in speech would be the pause or silence, in writing the space left in the contiguity between letters, and the page, in painting the blank canvas or the twisting of its edges by folding it over itself, the mere support or its assembly.
We have thus seen two complementary senses of the deferred: deferred by iteration, postponed, which implies non-presence, or less presence, postponement, and deferred by difference, which does not obtain its identity from itself, but from an other that precedes and succeeds it, and as that other is another sign with which the same thing happens again, it does not receive what is from itself, but from another sign, the game of the chain is governed by the gaps between signs, the white of the page, or of the canvas.
This refers to what is deferred, understood as "difference," the empty space between signs, the blank, from which these receive the chain that gives them meaning; here, deferred is then difference, but also that which differs.
It is understood in these two senses of the deferred, by iteration and by difference, that the crushed pieces of Alejandro González in that dimension uttered by the other to whom they are addressed, in that iterated bias of something always postponed anew, is as if he were erasing instead of writing, as if he were removing instead of adding, as if he were subtracting instead of adding, as if the entire work were itself negated and at the same time affirmed in a kind of negation of the negation, which shows the crushed, the moment in which something can be discarded, revoking the scrap of a process always unfinished not only on the side of an intention of communication, or of a self-centered wanting to say based on an expressive intentionality about the metaphysics of the support, but also because of the awareness that Alejandro makes explicit about the fact that, although in the optimal step of a message that gathers in all its conclusiveness an expressive intentionality of enunciation, the iteration makes it insoluble for this to reach a conclusion on the side of the work/spectator relationship.
Not only will the work inevitably remain, in Alejandro's words, a "deferred text," sent to an other never fully present, an imagined or anticipated interpretant in language that then does not coincide with the real spectator, but, on the side of the senses and meanings, on the side of interpretation, it will always appear as a dimension that is never self-centered, that does not close the cycle on itself between intentionality, the message and its reception.
To defer the work as an “iterated text” is then to open oneself to it from the side of that indeterminacy of everything, the sense, the meaning, it is to open oneself to the aesthetic experience of that postponement that always postpones again, insofar as in any case the meaning itself is indeterminate, as we evoked at the beginning of this essay quoting Alejandro; the artist, in this sense, is interested in an investigation that moves beyond mere polysemy.
The immaterial dimension or the intangible
We already know that, in any case, the interpretation will be multiple; the infinite number of viewpoints will never make it coincide with the intention or motivation of the speaker, nor as something that can be fixed as the internal meaning of that work, whatever it may be. Therefore, there is no point in trying to align an intention, its embodiment, and its interpretation.
On the contrary, it is about avoiding what will never be resolved, in order to grasp how the true nature of meaning lies precisely in that postponement, the work as a text always deferred, it is then to accept the iterated, non-presential, or less presential dimension, where the moments of presence are only that, moments, of a chain whose key does not lie in the semiotic triad of a pragmatic, “artist-work-spectator”, but precisely in the imaginary dimension, hence Alejandro's more recent interest in that other chain of meaning that goes from what Barthes called the pleasure of the text, to a joze, as well as his investigation of what he calls an “empty space”, a kind of intermediate point, which he even defines as a void or hole, something that alludes to the so-called black holes, an intermediate void in which for the artist the “aesthetic experience” itself consists.
As Alejandro states in some work notes that I have recently had the privilege of receiving, sharing them with me.
“Here, the work plunges into an opening, a vanishing point that generates a mutual observation where the viewer receives a mood, an intimacy, a pleasure that is nothing other than a fantasizing of the work; hence the emergence and viability of a path, an exchange.” “From this, one could think of the aesthetic fact as an absolute indeterminacy, that is, a void that celebrates the unfinished as an instance of a path, of the appearance of what was not there before.” “In another sense, one should understand the ambiguity of this middle ground as the site of aesthetic experience, since the exchanges are not linear (…). (…), the readings are ambiguous and the sensations and perceptions discontinuous.”
Alejandro González Días
But this other dimension that has more recently captivated Alejandro when he speaks of an “empty space” or a kind of in-between, is none other than an immaterial and intangible dimension. Let us consider “the work” on one side and “the spectator” on the other as tangible and material moments.
On one side, the work with its plastic thingness, its weight, its transportation, its matter; on the other, the real spectator in front of it. If we understand both things not only as a moment of presence and of the visible, we then represent ourselves in its reverse, the empty as non-presence and as the invisible.
If Alexander calls this emptiness and this invisibility "meaning," it is, in fact, for no other reason than that meaning itself, as well as significance, are intangible dimensions; they do not have a matter or a visibility in which they can be fixed or retained. They occur in the immateriality of interpretation, the latter in turn occurring or taking shape on the one hand in the immateriality that is proper to ideas, to thought, or to the spirit, the soul, the mind, or feelings.
And beyond, delocalized or dislocated from the very idea of the one, because understood in the hermeneusis of culture that makes the interpretive process, in that semiosis that in itself constitutes the hermeneusis of interpretive processes, that sense already dematerialized or immaterial and invisible, is plural, becomes pluralized, is disseminated, becomes indeterminate and becomes not only imaginary but also the imaginary itself.
It is not what is not there, it is not about that, but rather that it is as if in farewell to the material and tangible dimension.
The work and the spectator are undoubtedly moments of tangibility and moments of physical materiality, moments of presence, the phatic or the factual, but the aesthetic experience according to the artist has nothing to do with it; rather, on the contrary, it acquires its genesis, its source or its origin, as if from the other side, or on the reverse of that web of presences; it begins with a difference, it is not the mark, it is the empty space between the marks, it is not what is said but what is not said, it is not what is written but what is erased or what is never written, it is not what is signified but what is yet to be signified, always again deferred or postponed, it is not the tangible but intangibility.
Constellations
Seen in this light, Alejandro González's recent visual work, within the realm of the plastic arts, moves beyond and operates from other parameters that he calls transversal, distinct from those of explorations that took as their reference point the expository terms—exhibition, exhibition space, museum, presentation, display—or the codes of plastic matter associated with them, which decades ago did capture his attention: “support,” “format,” “physicality of the piece,” in a metatextual sense. This ranged from classical or orthodox conceptualism, where the themes were the gallery itself as a white cube, to phenomena that transform these codes, such as the frame, into a motif for exploration with plastic matter, as seen in the experimental work of the Spanish artist Angela de la Cruz, or in the times when scrap metal became art, as in the works of the British-Indian artist Hetain Patel., His “Transformers”, inspired by memories of his first car, a 1988 Ford Fiesta, sculptures made from the remains of a crushed car, or the works of the French sculptor Cesar Baldacini, passing through the best-known sculptural work of the American sculptor John Angus Chamberlain, to literal crushings as in the rectified drawings of the Spaniard Javier Arce.
Finally, something in Alejandro also reminds me, although from a very different aesthetic, poetic, and linguistic perspective, of the emphasis of the Venezuelan artist based in London, Cipriano Martínez, who exhibited in 2024 a show entitled “Pentimentos” alluding to this concept in the field of art history. Pentimento designates the changes that sometimes remain interwoven or can be read in the painting itself—positions of an arm, a face, or an intention of communication that we can see were going to be one way, but then took another direction in the final result. It is a concept that is used both in restoration, when an x-ray is taken of the painting and the changes are observed, and also remains visible or hidden behind the final result in some artists.
Cipriano, whose art is eminently abstract, even sometimes geometric, displayed works made from fragments of denied works, which could be read one after the other, also as unfinished works.
The allusion here is only for comparative purposes of understanding; it is not about pentimenti in any sense in Alexander, but rather, from another perspective, something that alludes to a process.
All these references, understood in a paronymic sense at the semantic level, that is, related in their visual, formal, aesthetic aspect (Alejandro González Díaz, Angela de la Cruz, Hetain, Bardacini, Chamberlain, etc.) but tending towards different senses and meanings, although they are planets to be mentioned in that galaxy that constellates the visual art of Alejandro González Díaz in the general framework of the visual culture of contemporary experimental art, formal affinities, but not of meaning, go along paths that differ in many aspects, as Alejandro himself has told me regarding Angela de Cruz, and the studies, explorations and investigations that Alejandro has been developing.
“In this context, the artwork is not reduced to its capacity for linguistic evocation,” Alejandro argues; “rather, it becomes a semiotic playing field in which the certainties of language are dismantled. By using materials and techniques such as fabric distortion, I seek to emphasize the inherent instability of meaning, an approach that focuses on the impossibility of establishing a single understanding of reality. The multiplicity of folds and surfaces invites continuous exploration and the renunciation of a single interpretation, thus reflecting a reality that is always multiple and subjective. The relationship between aesthetics and reality is not merely representational, but performative.”
Alejandro González Días
And the artist continues at another point saying:
“The deconstruction of established narratives invites continuous rereading, not to find a definitive truth, but to accept the richness of an unfinished interpretation.”
Alejandro González Días
The imaginary or the imaginary
But what is iterated as a difference that deviates from the mark (presence, a word as a mark on the sheet, an icon painted as a mark on the fabric, etc.), which places the identity of the sign, which postpones or delays the game of marks, of that mark which is itself the sign in its presence, which is even the presence versus the difference that sets it apart in its identity, can also be skin, and in that sense drive and eros.
That is, deferring the presence of inscribed or embodied signs, in favor of the empty space between them, is not only emptiness on the page, the white, or white on the canvas, or mere support, it is also surface, as we saw at the beginning, and that surface that utters the chain of a next sign leads to the surface as skin, and although that skin may sometimes be nothing other than linen, or paper, if we see it from the sense and meaning it is also immateriality, it can also be, in the imaginary of that dematerialization symbolized by the neat purity of the void or the zero of the canvas, both the page or the immaterial soul of a thought.
And here appears the relationship between the drive and the eros of a skin returning to enjoyment.
In this sense, we could argue with Gilles Deleuze in "The Logic of Sense" that "The deepest thing is the skin," to grasp how the recent research of Alejandro González Diaz moves not only towards a pleasure of the text, but towards a primacy of the imaginary which would not be, in his case, we must point out, properly the imaginary, in the Lacanian sense.
I do not consider that the work of Alejandro González Días can be understood as a study of the imaginary, but rather of that imaginary dimension through which an imagined other, which always differs from a real other, iterating meaning in its indeterminacy and the work in its unfinished character, is also a form of eroticism of emptiness that, if we go far enough in the interpretation and understanding of the place that empty space plays between the marks, would lead in a certain way to revoking a certain unconscious dimension; here the unconscious, without a doubt, would be nothing other than the sign itself, and in this way, Alejandro, like Alberto Méndez Suarez in another way, would be embracing a certain Lacanianism.
But let us not forget that if, in the words of Alexander, in this iteration language explodes, it is for no other reason than that we no longer find a language; let us ask ourselves, in fact, what is the unconscious, which we certainly cannot define by itself, but precisely that for which we do not find a language, something that we must always go in search of as a journey towards the inaccessible or the unnameable.
As the sign itself becomes unconscious according to the play of a chain of differences that defer presence, we acquire a sense of dissemination of language, but not for any other reason than because we no longer find a language to grasp what it is about.
Seen in this light, I prefer, alluding here to words expressed by Alejandro to me.
In our recent exchange, the idea of a tentative approach.
The tentative approach is at least an indication of recovery and, above all, a hermeneutical hope.
Cuban sociological art
But if, as in film, instead of keeping us in a close-up that holds the camera frame very close and very close, moving between close-ups and three-quarter or medium shots, we move the frame away, opening it progressively so that elements of place, site, context—the landscape, those who surround him, other artists, other works, and so on until we reach panoramic shots—begin to enter, we cannot avoid two things. In the first zoom out, we would perceive the entire body of work of Alejandro González Díaz as a very productive artist in completed works that have gone through different phases. Here we would have to include not only his other works, as we began to do before, but encompassing everything, but also his co-authored works or duo pieces with Jeny Casanueva, which are numerous and also relevant. In a second zoom in, opening the frame even further, we would find Alejandro's work within the framework of contemporary Cuban art, not only international and global art as I have done before, and in that same panoramic view, his duo works would also appear again.
Understood in this way, I see the work of Alejandro Gonzalez Dias, on the one hand, as a unique and very refined case of what I have elsewhere called the tradition of a “Cuban Sociological Art,” by which I mean a very precise line that has never been exhausted despite not including a large number of exponents, which began in Cuba with projects that went out into urban spaces with an interdisciplinary sense that in the most paradigmatic cases involved the relationship of conceptualism with the social sciences, sociology and anthropology.
Firstly, the projects “Hacer” and “Pilon,” which I conceived, created, conceptualized, and implemented in the late eighties. These two projects, which actually belong to the end of the eighties although they spanned the year 90, focused on the relationship between conceptual art and social sciences, largely taking the means of art and the objectives and methodologies of social sciences—sociology and anthropology. They presupposed and focused even on unconventional spaces such as residential neighborhoods, doorways, house interiors, side and back patios of country houses, but also on the spaces of urban social groups understood as cultural groups, skateboarders, places where rockers and punks meet, among other social groups, even the city itself at an urban level, buses, or places in the city understood from the map/territory relationship.
“Pilon,” moreover, also encompassed rural spaces such as peasant families, huts, religious temples and the very spatiality of Pilon as a town and 98 settlements in the mountains.
Continuing with this line, one could mention the first experiences in neighborhoods by Carlos Garaicoa in the early nineties, and some well-chosen projects at the beginning of René Francisco's work.
However, this is a tradition that has continued with experiences that occurred well into the new century, such as the projects of the DIP, Department of Public Interventions, an experience developed along these lines or traditions from ISA, Experimental University of the Arts, where I would highlight, in terms of individualities, beyond the group projects that are also included, the works of María Victoria Portelles and Tatiana Mesa Paján.
In my opinion, Alejandro Gonzalez Dias is the youngest yet most refined exponent of this tradition, which also includes, from another perspective, more closely linked to theater, the projects developed at that time by Alberto Mendez Suarez, an analytical philosopher established in Florida a few decades ago.
On the one hand, even after moving away from those early projects that Alejandro developed in unconventional urban spaces and outdoor areas, we cannot understand the entirety of Alejandro Gonzalez Dias's visual work without excluding the relevance of his interdisciplinary experimentation with sociology. I would say that even his most recent work, which has moved far away from those projects, remains somewhat inaccessible to a comprehensive understanding if it is not also, or simultaneously, understood as a form of sociology where, although very diluted in questions about aesthetics, one could not fail to mention works of sociological interest related to his research, such as, for example, that of Jean Boudrillard.
But it is true that, when understanding Alejandro Gonzalez Dias as a leading exponent of this tradition in the new century, he does not appear alone, but the joint work with Jeny Casanueva is also crucial in this, complementing it, and I would also include her in this sense as a leading exponent, both together and as individuals.
It is not the purpose of this essay to study or delve into what those projects were; I focus here on the artist's current work, but with regard to the characteristics of the latter, it is unavoidable to address some joint works by Alejandro and Jeny.
Both prominent and relevant figures among the best and most intellectually refined of that line I identified earlier as the tradition of a Cuban sociological art, some of their joint works open up the question of to what extent and from what perspectives Alejandro's current work can also be understood in a postmodernist sense. In this regard, I will mention very specific works such as "Spelling Cy Twombly," or untitled works developed around a classic painting by Rembrandt, "Exclusive," "Underlying," "Institutional," "Ephemeral," "Archives," "Historical," "No Need to Fear the Chiches," "Destinations."
“Aesthetics”, “Disasters”, “Timeless”, “Darkness”, “on the table”, “infinite projection”, “The organs of the body”, among others.
All these works, based on and developed around concepts that are treated as words in the sense of including large-scale text within the work, as well as the luminous element, while persuading us to recall, for these two reasons—the inclusion of text, which is sometimes a single word but can occasionally become entire paragraphs, either accepted or crossed out, and the inclusion of the luminous element—in the work of a conceptualist like Joseph Kossuth, are nevertheless far from being mere linguistic games in directions such as those suggested by theLudwig Wittgenstein's philosophy of language, rather,In contrast, they seem driven by a postmodernist impetus, at least if we view the latter from the perspective of a certain intertextuality, even a sense of quotation. The most paradigmatic works in this sense, works in which photography also appears recurrently, would be "Spelling Cy Tombly" and the work that directly quotes a painting by Rembrandt. But in general, they all participate in an attention that looks towards art itself, not in the tautological conceptual mode of a thought about language, of linguistic inspiration, or focused on the concept of art and its definition, but rather they externalize art within the institutional field of art, thinking of it in the sense of Frederic Jameson as a "spectacle of availability."
Exit: Reflexivism
Alejandro even shared this idea of "process art" with Jeny Casanueva in joint works during another period.
But returning to the recent works of Alejandro Gonzales Dias that have focused my attention in this essay, I would like to close this effort by opening the question of to what extent that denial of the presence or the presence of the work that we have in these crumpled or folded canvases of Alejandro is not in a certain way also a continuation at another level and from new perspectives of that diatribe that in itself runs through process art since Fluxus.
I am referring to an art that, caught between the relevance of the process with its synchronic temporality of a now and a lived here, the experience, is then forced to transform the work into a documentation or testimony of that process by means of photographic sequences or presentations of reconstructivist flight towards what is lost or diminished in that process by the imprint of the work as a concluding moment.
Is there not, in that revocation of the unfinished, to which Alejandro refers in his new investigation, something that can lead us to a certain negation of the work or to a certain resistance to the process being exhausted by it, even going so far as to desist from the possibilities of a reconstruction, in order instead, denying the work as a conclusive moment, to invoke a process with its always open temporality that is transformed into pure reflexivity?
At one point, in fact, Alejandro maintains
“What I propose is a division between understanding and the work. When I make a work, I only show that which I cannot say, since my work will always be a case, a shipwreck, something that has been transfigured, deviated from its course, an adventure.”
Alejandro González Días
Is this not an unavoidable and insoluble parallel between understanding, as Alejandro calls it, I would say, between the process of continuous reflexivity linked to the creative process and the work?
What matters here is the very process of continuous reflexivity, of which the works are merely moments or instances? Would this imply a parallelism in which, as if divided, the understanding, toward whose end this continuous reflexivity is oriented, and the work would unfold as if in parallel?
Replacing the physical making of the work by renouncing the artifact in favor of the conceptualizing process continues to be, in a way, the cliché of conceptualism, but here, with Alejandro, on the contrary, it deals with a kind of carrying on at the same time that revoked reflective process as that which is continuous, or that which continues despite the works, although of itself, and the works as moments that are always unfinished.
Regarding the continuity of this incessant reflexivity, sometimes interrupted and not always linear, the work then appears as if on the verge of being discarded or as recovered waste. The appearance of texts, or writings, within the body of the work seems interrupted, fragmented, scattered, as indeed occurs in this series by Alejandro, where fragments of texts, left behind or affected by interference, noise, entropy, dislocation, etc., always appear as if beneath or behind this folding.
Viewed or understood from the highly significant role that the reflective process plays in Alexander's work as an ultimate goal in itself, division appears as an invocation of that process. In this sense, I share and agree with David Cohen's impressions when he maintains, regarding these works of Alexander, that
“(…) The metaphor of the crumpled canvas is based on the idea that identity is not a fixed state, but a scenario in continuous reconfiguration”
David Cohen

David Cohen
