Week One

Finalize Employment/Hiring Logistics

On the first day, make sure your new hire completes their I-9 documentation via HireForms to verify they meet legal requirements to work in the United States.

On the same day, schedule a "Benefits in Brief" session conducted for state employee new hires. These sessions are facilitated by presenters from the Public Employees Health Program (PEHP) and Utah Retirement Systems (URS). Sessions are held at the Taylorsville State Office Building (TSOB) on the second Tuesday of each month from 8:30 to 12:00 noon. You must schedule this for your employee in advance by calling Courts HR at 801-238-5409 or sending an email to CourtsHR@utcourts.gov to register. Participants can also opt to attend virtually via Google Meet and should mention that preference when scheduling attendance.

"Big Picture" Orientation to the Courts

Instead of referring your new hire to follow a link to learn more about the Courts, consider a face-to-face review of this Courts Tour for New Employees with your new hire so they can see the "big picture" on their first day. Include a discussion and an assignment for them to ask those with whom they will be working about how their role impacts others in the Courts, using the two questions found here.

Set a Proactive, Positive, Mission-driven Tone

Prepare a draft performance plan using one of the generic templates published here. It will likely not be finalized in the first week - consider using the generic template to discuss with your new hire how their job aligns with and advances the mission of the Courts.

Make a plan to discuss (on the first day or during the first week) what they learned by asking the two impact questions and incorporate those findings as appropriate into the performance plan you will finalize before they finish their first month on the job.
