Endangered Languages: The Role of German and Italian

Project of the University of Bergamo: Academic German: a research topic and a communication language in scientific discourse and in academic education

Academic education today has to face two challenges not easily compatible with one another. It has to accommodate with specificities due to cultural (and linguistic) mindsets, that characterize the modes in which scientific research is approached and that find their expression in academic writing. At the same time academic education and scientific research also have to integrate themselves into a wider international context and into a dialogue with the international community.

These necessities must confront with the arduous problem of the hierarchical ranging of the European languages (Oesterreicher 2004) and require answers from universities and institutions that are by no means easy to give. Furthermore, one has to take into account the increasing mobility of the students outside their national barriers, a mobility which is highly promoted by European initiatives such as the Erasmus/Socrates project and other similar ones.

An adequate response to the complexity of this situation should attempt, on the one hand, to safeguard and preserve the expressive potential of the single languages used for academic purposes (Heller 2004), and, on the other, to provide a linguistic preparation of the students, allowing them to actively participate in multilingual academic-scientific communication (Caspar-Hehne/Ehlich 2004).

This research unit has addressed the question of academic-scientific communication under a double perspective. Firstly, iI has concentrated on the varieties of ‘scientific’ German both as a subject of study and as a communication language in research and academic education (Weinrich 2001); secondly, it has carried out a comparative analysis of parallel texts (in German and Italian). Comparative studies of German and Italian on this basis are virtually non-existent (see Hornung 2003; Schmidt 2002; Tonelli 2002), while there is already an established tradition of contrastive studies between the Anglosaxon and German styles, specifically regarding academic writing (e.g. Clyne 1987, 1991, 1993).

The genres selected for this research have great relevance for academic education. The analysis has concentrated on the textual and rhetorical/stylistic conventions, without omitting the pragmatic functions connected to the modalities of expression that constrain the interpretation of a given text.

 Taking into consideration the divergence between cultural and/or linguistic specificities, on the one hand, and the process of internationalization, on the other, a divergence that academic education and scientific research currently have to cope with, the research project has also taken into account the need to identify didactic initiatives aimed at the linguistic preparation of students who, within the Erasmus/Socrates project or other projects of international academic education, plan a period of study in a German-speaking country. 

The first phase of the project involved the creation of a corpus, partly monolingual (German), partly made of parallel texts (German and Italian), including texts apt to introduce university students to scientific study and research, reports and short dissertations written by students of German (L1 and L2) as well as essays submitted for research evaluation.

In the second phase, specific features of the corpus texts were analysed, with due consideration given to textual linkage and genre conventions transcending national and linguistic boundaries. As regards the student-produced texts, attention was paid especially to the differences in the modalities of academic writing faced by Italian students when confronted with the university system of German-speaking countries.

The results of the project have brought a significant contribution to the investigation of the development of German as a scientific language, and to a deeper understanding of the notion of "alltägliche Wissenschaftssprache" (see Ehlich 1995, 1999), a field where linguistic choices, not clearly evident at first sight, reflect the complex interaction between specialised and non-specialised use of language within academic communication; moreover this study has provided further evidence for a cultural approach to research and fruitful insights into how acquired knowledge is perceived, appreciated and managed.

As regards teaching issues, it is hoped that this contribution might bring a promising answer to the need for an adequate linguistic and cultural preparation of Italian students who wish to complete their academic studies abroad. In this perspective, a better knowledge of the stylistic and textual conventions of German is to be considered an important factor in the successful outcome of an academic and scientific course in a German-speaking country.
