South Dakota is one of the Great Plain states. It became a state on November 2, 1889, making it the 40th state of the United States. BUT. . .

North Dakota and South Dakota are known as "twin states" because they were admitted to the Union on the same day. Alphabetically, North Dakota is recognized as the 39th state and South Dakota the 40th.

The state capital is Pierre and the largest city is Sioux Falls.

Mount Rushmore

South Dakota’s most famous landmark is Mount Rushmore National Memorial. Mount Rushmore is located in the Black Hills.

The faces of four U.S. presidents were carved into the side of a granite mountain between 1927 and 1941. How many years did it take to "build" Mount Rushmore?

The national monument features U.S. presidents: George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt, and Abraham Lincoln. It took less than $1 million to complete this historical landmark.

A most famous dinosaur, Sue the T. Rex, was discovered near the Badlands in 1990. She is 42 feet long and 12 feet high at the hips. Sue the T. Rex is considered to be the largest and most-complete Tyrannosaurus Rex ever found.

However, if you want to visit Sue, you will need to leave South Dakota and travel to Illinois. Sue is housed in the The Field Museum in Chicago.

The state of South Dakota gets it name from the Dakota Sioux Native American tribes. The Dakota Sioux originally settled this area of the United States.

It is thought that the word "Dakota" means “friend” or “ally” in the Sioux language.

Badlands National Park is a rugged, eroded area of buttes and gullies. The park is located in southwestern South Dakota.

It was established as a national monument in 1939 and designated a national park in 1978.

For 11,000 years, Native Americans hunted this land. An abundance of wildlife including bison, deer, prairie dogs and bighorn sheep live in the Badlands.
