Massachusetts

You have been transported back in time to 1716 when the first lighthouse was built in the USA. It is located on Little Brewster Island in the Boston Harbor. You have 30 minutes to unlock the locks so you can help George Worthylake (first keeper of Boston Light) light the tallow candles. No crashes on your watch!

Massachusetts is officially called the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and is part of the region called the New England States.

The state is named for the Massachusett tribe which once lived in the area. Massachusetts became a state on February 6, 1788, the 6th state.

Boston is the capital and the largest city in the state. Massachusetts is bordered by the Atlantic Ocean and 5 states.

Chocolate Chip Cookies

In 1938 Ruth and her husband Kenneth Wakefield owned a hotel called the Toll House Inn. One night she added semi-sweet chocolate pieces into her cookie recipe. The tasty treats were first called "Toll House Crunch Cookies". The recipe was printed in a Boston newspaper which grew in popularity. We know this cookie today as the chocolate chip cookie.

Agawam, Massachusetts received the first zip code in the United States.

Deborah Samson Gannett fought in the American Revolution as Robert Shurtleff. Before she was wounded in battle (and her masquerade was discovered) she was recognized for outstanding service. Massachusetts observes each May 23 as an anniversary commemorating her enlistment in the Continental Army.

Massachusetts adopted Deborah Samson Gannett as official state heroine in 1983. She made a unique contribution to American independence, and was the first woman to be awarded a military pension.

The cranberry is the official state berry of Massachusetts. A fifth-grade class lobbied the Massachusetts legislature to grant the cranberry this honor in 1994.

The cranberry was very important to the native Americans in New England. The little berry was eaten raw, dried, boiled, or baked. Native Americans also used the berry to dye robes, rugs, and blankets. They also believe cranberries have a calming effect on nerves. Native Americans also made a poultice from cranberries to draw out poisons from wounds.

Cranberries grow in bogs.

Fenway Park is the oldest ballpark in Major League Baseball. Since 1912, it has been home for the Boston Red Sox. It is located in Boston at 4 Yawkey Way.

Fenway is also home to the Green Monster which is the tallest wall in any MLB park at an impressive 37'2" high. The left field wall is only 310 feet from home plate and is a popular target for ready, righteous, right-handed hitters.
