Because of its continuous volcanic eruptions, Hawaii is the only state in the nation to have an increasing land area. Pretty cool, indeed! But you have just been alerted that Kilauea is going to have a major eruption soon and you need to warn all the tourists at the Public Lava Viewing Area. Hurry you have 30 minutes to unlock the locks and get down the trail before the lava starts spewing.

The Hawaiian flag has eight bold horizontal stripes representing the eight major islands, and the British Union Jack is displayed in the upper left corner to honor Hawaii's relationship with Great Britain.

Hawaii was the last state to join the United States, receiving statehood on August 21, 1959. Hawaii is comprised of hundreds of island spread out over 1,500 miles in the Pacific Ocean. There are eight main islands:

King Kamehameha I was a great warrior, diplomat and leader. After several years of war, he united the Hawaiian Islands into one royal kingdom in 1810.

Historians believe Kamehameha was born in 1758, the year Halley’s comet passed over Hawaii.

Every June 11th, on Kamehameha Day, the four statues of King Kamehameha are ceremoniously draped with flower leis to celebrate Hawaii’s greatest king.

Hawaii is the only state to grow coffee.

Hawaii is the only state to have a rainbow on their license plate.

Hawaii's highest peak is Mauna Kea . It rises 13,802 ft. into the air. Mauna Kea is a dormant volcano located on the island of Hawaii. The summit is often snow-covered in the winter.

In 2015, Hawaiian Lawmakers named the pahu, a Hawaiian drum, as the state's traditional musical instrument in 2015. And the ukulele was designated the state's modern musical instrument symbol. The ukulele is now a symbol of the islands, but it was brought to Hawaii around 1879 by Portuguese immigrants.

Surfing is a sport where you ride a surfboard on the waves breaking toward the shore. The Hawaiian Islands have many great spots to surf. Big wave season happens approximately between November and February on Hawaii’s north shores.

The Hibiscus is the state flower of Hawaii. In addition each island has an official color, flower, or lei material.

Barack Obama was the 44th president of the United States. He is the only president born outside the continental United States. President Obama was born on August 4, 1961 at the Kapiolani Hospital for Women & Children in the capital city of Honolulu on the island of Oahu.
