Kansas

At one time it was against the law to serve ice cream on cherry pie in Kansas. There is a rumor, that this law could come back. It is up to you to solve the Kansas Locks in 30 minutes and keep this law from being reinstated.

Kansas became the 34th state on January 29, 1861. The capital city is Topeka, but the largest city is Wichita.

Kansas is named after the Kansa Native American tribe, which lived in this part of the United States for thousands of years.

Kansas is bordered on the north by Nebraska and Missouri on the east. Oklahoma borders to the south and Colorado to the west.

The state is divided into 105 counties.

The flag of Kansas is a blue rectangle with the state seal in the center. Above the seal is a sunflower which rests over a bar of gold and light bar. Below the bar is the official seal of Kansas. Underneath the seal is the word KANSAS in yellow capital letters.

Pizza Hut restaurants opened its first store in Wichita, Kansas. This franchise was founded in 1958 by brothers, Dan and Frank Carney.

Amelia Earhart was born on July 24, 1897 in Atchison, Kansas.

At an air show in 1920, Amelia Earhart took a 10 minute plane ride that transformed her life. After landing, she knew she had to learn to fly.

In the summer of 1921, Earhart purchased a used biplane painted bright yellow. She nicknamed it "The Canary."

October 22, 1922 was the date in which Earhart broke the women's altitude record when she rose to 14,000 feet.

On May 15, 1923, Amelia Earhart became the 16th woman to be issued a pilot's license .

In 1932, she became the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean.

In 1935, she also became the first woman to fly across the Pacific Ocean.

She disappeared on July 3, 1937 to fly around the world.

Dodge City, Kansas is the windiest city in the United States. Its average wind speed reaches 14 miles per hour.

Probably the most famous appearance of the state of Kansas is in the Wizard of Oz. Dorothy, Toto, Scarecrow, Tin Man and the Cowardly Lion are following the Yellow Brick Road to the Emerald City. All are seeking help from the Wonder Wizard of Oz.

Kansas is one of the most productive agricultural states, producing large quantities of corn, wheat, sorghum, and soybeans.

Kansas adopted the song, "Home on the Range" as the official state song in 1947. The poem called, "The Western Home" was written in 1872 by Dr. Brewster Higley.
