Illinois became the 21st state on December 3, 1818. The capital city is Springfield and Chicago is the largest city. Illinois is bordered by 5 states: Iowa, Indiana, Kentucky, Missouri, and Wisconsin. Illinois also touches one of the five great lakes: Lake Michigan.

Illinois is the 5th most populous state with almost 13 million residents.

Illinois has two nicknames: Land of Lincoln, Prairie State.

Illinois is home to the World's Largest Catsup Bottle

The largest catsup bottle stands just south of downtown Collinsville, Illinois. This unique 170 ft. tall water tower was built in 1949 by the W.E. Caldwell Company for the G.S. Suppiger catsup bottling plant. This plant bottled the Brooks old original rich & tangy catsup. How else can you spell this red delicious condiment?


The Nabisco factory in Chicago is the world’s largest bakery in the whole wide world at 1,800,000 square feet!

1,200 people work at this facility and they produce 320 million pounds of snacks food yearly.

The Lincoln Park Zoo in Chicago is free for visitors and the nation's oldest public zoo. The zoo has 1,100 animals from about 200 species. Animals include the big cats, polar bears, penguins, gorillas, reptiles, monkeys and the popular Farm-in-the-Zoo.

Four presidents have lived in Illinois: Abraham Lincoln, Ulysses Grant, Barack Obama, and Ronald Reagan. But the only U.S. President actually born and raised in Illinois was Ronald Reagan.

The state of Illinois is the largest pumpkin producer in the United States. Both types are grown:

1. Ornamental (pumpkins to make jack o'lanterns)

2. Canning-type pumpkins (pumpkins to make pie).

Morton, Illinois, 10 miles southeast of Peoria calls itself the “Pumpkin Capital of the World.”

Twinkies were invented on April 6, 1930 in River Forest by James Alexander Dewar. A Twinkie is a small spongy snack cake with vanilla cream filling. This golden yellow treat is shaped like a tiny loaf.

The ice cream sundae originated in Evanston.
