California became the 31st state on September 9, 1850. It is the most populous state in the United States and is the third largest state in area. The capital city is Sacramento, but the largest city is Los Angeles.

California is bordered on the north by Oregon. Two other states, Nevada and Arizona border California on the east. The Pacific Ocean borders the whole west side of California. And to the south, California shares an international border with the Mexican state of Baja California.

The Official State Nickname of California is "The Golden State."

It become the official state nickname in 1968.

On January 24, 1848, James Marshall, was helping build a lumber mill for John Sutter in Coloma, California. He found a shiny lump of gold in the American River. The news triggered a massive rush of gold-seekers flocking from all over the world. They came to California in hopes of striking it rich. These people were called "forty-niners" because many of them arrived around the year 1849. California was originally nicknamed the Grizzly Bear State, but after the gold rush, it became known as the Golden State.

California grows a sizable majority of the fruits, vegetables and nuts in the United States. Above 90% of ALL artichokes, walnuts, kiwis, plums, celery, and garlic are grown in the Golden State.
