Louisiana sure likes the pelican. The state nickname is The Pelican State and the official state bird is the brown pelican.

Pelicans have a large body and a long bill. Their huge throat pouch can hold 3 gallons of water. The brown pelican mainly feeds on fish. This bird lives along the shores of the ocean.

A female pelican usually lays 3 eggs. Both mother and father work together to build their nest and incubate their eggs. Together, they protect, feed, and teach their young to fly.

Newly hatched pelican chicks are pink. They turn gray or black within 4 to 14 days. Six to nine weeks after hatching, the juveniles leave their nest and gather in small groups called pods.
