Rhode Island might be the smallest state in the whole nation, but this state needs you. Connecticut is looking to double its size and has threatened to annex the state. But never fear, if you solve the Rhode Island Breakout in 30 minutes, Rhode Island will still have the honor of calling itself the smallest state!

Rhode Island is the smallest state in size in the United States. It covers an area of 1,214 square miles.

The distance Rhode Island measures is:

North to South - 48 miles

East to West 37 miles.

Rhode Island became a state on May 29, 1790, the last of the original thirteen colonies to do so.

Providence is the capital city.

Providence, RI is home to the world’s largest bug, a giant 2-ton, 58 foot long termite. The bug is called “Nibbles Woodaway”, and he sits on top of a pest control building. Nibbles is even lit up at Christmas.

The Rose Island Lighthouse was built in 1870 on Rose Island. This island is located in Narragansett Bay in Newport.

1970 - The building was abandoned.

1984 - The Rose Island Lighthouse Foundation restored it .

1987 - The Federal Government listed the lighthouse on the National Register of Historic Places .

1992 - The lighthouse was relit as a private aid to navigation.

Today - You can only reach the lighthouse by boat. For a fee you can spend the night as a guest or you can spend a week as the "lighthouse keeper." Many chores are required to keep the lighthouse in good condition.

Rhode Island was the last state to adopt an official state flower. There are 400-500 different kinds of violets in the world. The violet was voted as the state flower by the school children in 1897, but the flower was not officially adopted by the state until 1968.

The official beverage of Rhode Island is Coffee Milk. Coffee milk is a drink made by mixing coffee syrup and milk together.

The flag of Rhode Island is white. It has a gold anchor in the center. The anchor is surrounded by thirteen gold stars which represent the original 13 colonies. The state motto "Hope" is on a blue ribbon underneath the anchor. The flag is also edged with yellow fringe.

Red Maple

The Red Maple Tree officially became the state tree until 1964. This tree is one of the most common deciduous trees in the Eastern and Central regions of the United States. This tree can grow to be 15M (50 ft) tall. The red maple tree provides spectacular fall color - the leaves can turn gold, purple, and scarlet.

The state bird of Rhode Island is really not a bird, it is a chicken. The Rhode Island Red became the official state bird on May 3, 1954. This chicken has rust-colored feathers. A red Rhodie rooster can weigh almost 9 pounds while a hen will usually weight about 6.5 pounds. The chicks are light red to tan in color.

Rhode Island hens usually lay between 200–300 brown eggs per year.

The International Tennis Hall of Fame is located in Newport, Rhode Island. The Museum is open daily 10-5 and 10-6 during July and August. Admission is $15 for adults and children under 16 are admitted for free.

The Hall of Fame honors players and contributors to the sport of tennis and includes a museum, grass tennis courts, an indoor tennis facility, and a court tennis facility.
